chess in the park (animated gif process) *updated 10.29.5*

ive been donig a lot of thinking lately about my art, and how i really havent taken the time to really study color and light, so i started looking more at craig mullins, steve huston, sargent, etc. and really trying to understand how they can create a believable image using color and light and not by simply copying what is directly in front of them. so anyway, i took this pic a couple years ago in the park in chinatown and thought i would give it a try. i feel like i need to go back to school.

awesome subject. doing lighting studies is the next step for you cuz you already have a lot of technical skill now you just gotta push it and bring everything together..

    nice one.

Wow this is excellent! I have nothing to crit here. I LOVE ho you can't actually see what is the focus of everyones attention.... it engages the viewer perfectly, while some may be comfortable beleiving it's a chess board in there, others may not be so sure....

    Great Job. Congrats!

wow! thanks for all the very kind comments. im going to have to do some more since everyone liked this one, heh.

mike c - yeah, i have noticed that when i am doing things from my imagination i begin to rely on the same lighting schemes because that is what i know, and i never push them. hopefully doing things like this it will increase my "goody bag." now the hard part is just to remember and understand how to apply these things to my illustrations.

chingwa - hah, yeah it actually turned out well that you cant exactly see what they are all crowded around. i was beginning to wonder if people were going to say "so where is the chess board?" thanks

I don't even want to see the photograph. It would only spoil the impressionist quality of this fabulous work. Looking forward to the next one!

My heart is palpatating a bit... my palms are a little clammy... Man, if I start going numb in the extremities, you're getting an ER bill.

    Just delightful.

And delightful in that sense when you crawl out of bed after having sex with a super model and you put on your pants, only to find several hundred-dollar bills wadded into the pocket.

    That kind of delightful.
