    Hyp0calvin (Oct. 26)

Hi, I've been meaning to post here for a long time now, but with AP testing and stuff, i couldn't find a good time. Well, now that it is over, i can finally start up my own thread. yay.

I'm exploring a wide range of styles ranging from cartoon/anime, realistic/figures, illustration, industrial design type things. The following are pages in my sketchbook that i particually liked, i just tried to show a variety of subjects that i like.
Many of my pages are referenced or directly copied, I usually give credit to the person directly on the page.

I like the one figure in color especially. Some nice anime type drawings there too.

Incidentally I see a lot of folks using the blue pencils..any reason why?

    Good luck to you!

thanks fatkid. btw, does anyone here have an Art Club at any of your schools? I made an Art Club at my school and I'm just trying to make it a "live" version of conceptart.org...with critiques, demos, tutorials, contests and that sort. Does anyone have any experience of what people at other "Art Clubs" do?

another progession for my art contest entry. im trying to portray the theme of the contest: air sports and nature in harmony. im trying to do this with the eagle and the hang glider (who im having a really rough time on) and with that swirly stuff..to show how they nature and air sports "intertwine" and stuff..but it feels like they are on fire or sumthing. it also reminds me of Chinese new year and dragons..uhg..

ok.. this is my entry for an art content, its red ribbon week at my school. the theme is : take care of yourself, take care of each other. I reallly really would appreicate any critiques on it, especially since I have time to make adjustments because it's due in a week. or, if you have any other insights, I would appreicate them so I could apply them on my next piece.

Edit: (11/6) yay, I got first place for this entry..won $100 ! yay! can you believe it? haha (There were only like 12 other entries I was competing with)

Really like your concept drawings. Some proportional errors on the figures, but then again maybe you didn't go for realism. Colours are excellent especially on that carbikemotorcycle concept.

thanks for the comments. Even though i did go for a cartoon style, there still is no excuse for having such bad anatomy. You're right I really need to work on my figure drawing...which is why i did some after you said that!
..(thanks for reminding me) I haven't been doing a lot of figure drawing for a long time, I took a long break after doing all that "concept industrial design" stuff, but I'll still take turns doing both.
If you have any crits or advice on my figures, please feel free to give suggestions. I'm still at a beginning stage on these proportions and stuff.

This is an art contest I turned in for reflections. The theme is "I wonder Why"
here was my written "Artists Statement"
    Artist Statement
    I wonder why…

On a literal sense, this artwork conveys the meaning of “Why can’t we fly like Birds.” On the right we see a young man, intrigued by the feather of a bird, and on the left, we see that same man – decades later -- working out his conundrum. It is common knowledge today that anatomical structure and the principles of dynamics prevent us from flying as birds do, even though we come very close to imitating the flight of birds with airplanes, hang gliders etc.,. But, we are never able flap wings and fly with the gracefulness of a bird. However, the artwork has nothing to do with an actual bird, because on close inspection, one sees that the bird is actually a dove: a symbol for peace. Humans have waged war on each other for centuries and continue to spur conflict and hatred. The question, “why can’t we fly like doves” is really a question of “why can’t we have peace,” or “why can’t we fly in harmony like doves do?”
    Chris Chien

I've already turned the entry in, so there's isn't much I can do about it. But if you have any crits for what I can improve on in the future, I would greatly appreciate them.

" this is a copy from the SKETCH THREAD"
Hi, for this artwork, I'm trying to portray "flying in harmony with nature." Its a work in progress, and here are some progressions. I'm kinda struggling with this, I would appreciate any critiques.

I'm probably going to rid of those stripe things and blend them a bit. I'm trying to go for a color thats in alot of Ryan Church's digital paintings, which I think is pretty hard since I'm working with trad. medium. btw, CRITS are very welcome. I would appreciate any that you have, I'm turning this in next WED!!!

Thank you everyone for the comments.
that fat kid: yeah you aren't the to comment on my anatomy. My figure drawing/painting skills is really jarring in my reflections piece. I've been doing some studies of anatomy but I really wish I could take another figure drawing class to push me. I've been just doing contests and SATs recently. ...still, its no excuse *sigh*
oh yeah... this is work in progress for my art contest entry "air sports and nature in harmony"

Just to clear things up, I'm not that good and I didn't take that beautiful water photo - its just a place holder. It's from http://www.albertorossini.com/images...%20PREMIUM.jpg Its was just the first picture I grabbed from google. I'll use my own camera to take a picture later, its out of batteries for the moment.

With that said this poster is for an art contest -- Theme: "You can make a difference." This is the 1st place winner from last year apparently the judges like stuff thats simple but effective.

This is only my first draft, I would appreciate any comments about what you think of the typography, compostion, colors or anything in general. I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Really nice concepts and that last contest entry is fantastic, which brings me to my next point. I don't know if it's international or something, but my school had that same contest. Are you in the San Gabriel School District? If so, let's start a sketch group!!!!?!!

    Or something

guggen: thanks. I use copic and prismacolor markers.
fatkid: thanks for the encouragement. I will try work hard continuously and keep posting.

I had fun with this one. The girl is from a comic called sinfest. www.sinfest.net It's one of my favorite comic strips -- it takes alot of homage to Calvin and Hobbes.

    Crit are ALWAZ appreciated.
