Heaven - my first series of oil paintings

there is a LOT of art centered around religous subject matter...maybe that's because churches need altars or illuminated manuscripts need gore to create pathos or inspiration...anyway...after deciding that gouche is mostly for illlustration and not always meant to hang on livingroom or diningroom walls i decided to try oil on panel applied with a slow thin glaze technique...and i love it...i feel like i am 4 again....talk about a challenge...

here are some of the images i did for a show i am having this weekend at Copro Nason with a great friend andrew brandou

thanks for checking this stuff out...if i fail to sell a single piece from this series i'll be happy i went this route just the same...

Pretty nice style there...reminds me of Ryden. Some of the shadows I feel would be better with some warmer tones, and not so much the neutral greys you have now. The paintings kind of muddy up because of it. Also some of the color choices don't make sense. For instance on the second piece she is holding a warm flaming heart which seems to be the main light source cast on her face, but the highlight tones on her skin look more like they come from a flourescent bulb.

The little details like that stand out and detract a bit from your otherwise nice paintings. congrats with the oils and good luck at the show!

    thanks!!!

i appreciate the feedback people...coming up with an approach to color is everything in glaze painting i think...so i will just keep at it...

next time i think it'd be best to do the whole image in black and white and then use glazes to tint and hop up the chroma in places where the effect is desired...in learning to paint with oil i am learning a hard lesson about patience...but it's fun...

    again...thanks for the supportive criticism!
