DSG 757: Biological Detail: THE WEIRD EYE, UP-CLOSE

An ideal opportunity to exercise your knowledge of occular structure now presents itself in DSG form.

If you think you know the eye and think it's boring, then you don't really know the eye. If you really do know the eye, but you still think it's boring, then make it interesting with strangeness.

Biological Detail: THE WEIRD EYE, UP-CLOSE

    A few reference pics:

landline to my house is dying... DSL can only connect for 2 mins straight before dropping. Took fifteen mins to do the quick pic, half an hour to upload and post this.

p.s. it's too small to be seen but gibson reference.

inspired by the Corinthian from Neil Gaiman's Sandman...

Cleaned it up a bit. but still ultra-fast with mouse.

Eyes are cool, because we can see colours :)

I'm very pleased with how mine worked out. And it's only a hour (and it looked almost done after half an hour)!
Painter. 'Nervous Pen' is teh shit. I've also used a lot of 'Loaded Palette Knife', some 'Scratchboard Tool' and 'Oil Pastel'.

    Comments (mainly critique, I'm afraid)

machzero It's not bad, but obviosly it needs focus. You need to grab a smaller, sharper brush, get some harder shadows in it, add some details, like little reflections. And after all there are so many brushes in Painter it's a sin to not use more of them. (oh, 15min, you say? That explains a bit. It's too little to make a pic interesting, at least with this kind of style) (the text is fun, at first I thought you mean that you used a photo of Gibson's eye to paint this )
CHeeZy-Boi I've been doing some traditional art lately, so now I know a bit about it, and that bit is that your shading should define the shape. It's too random here. Another thing is that the eye is an orb, and it's not in your picture. The idea is not bad.
Mr north Is that a reworked photo? Very unclear. The idea is ok, but you didn't do it too eye appealing. A weird picture.
glikster Messy, you spent too little time on it for me to comment more. (Neil Gaiman rules)

    Thanks a lot CrazyHarij

The eye of a space folder is extremly near-sighted and the pupil is always dialated. This is due to generations of folders being exposed to Melange and the unique abilities of the folder to view space-time and create accurate shortcuts through it.
painter 30 min. not as wierd as I hoped it would be

A rush job, a whole lot of "that sucks, oh well I'm not going to spend time fixing it...".

Jwsamsara & machzero - might want to look at where lashes attach to the lower lid.

Done in painter 7 about 1-1½ hour (used the ref and also used the color picker a couple of times from the picture since I suck at picking colors myself )

Gah, how did I not see that? The entire eye socket area looked much rounder when I was doing it, too, but looks flat to me now. Thanks AB.

This started out as a simple pencil-in-sketch-book sketch ....that ended up needing a lot of help from Photoshop.

Skuli - neat! I like the colors you used within the iris.

Aberrant - I really like the flesh around the eye. It has this strange "is it rock? is it skin?" feel to it

Goran - nice. I like how the wires look almost like veins and the iris-muscle-line thingies are also electrical currents. cool idea.

Gilkster - super neat idea! What if the mouth were biting through on an iris or pupil?

Machzero - kudos on the reference. Though, yeah, it's really hard to see at first.

My first DSG! (yeah finally *winks at Hamsta* hehe)

Used a photo of myself. My eyes were kind of red, was tired. First serious eye in Photoshop (Didn't shrink it down btw, made it like this).

Please don't kill me Do want C&C of course!

    EDIT:
Just saw Cthogua had a similar idea. Ahh well..

heh... don't ask me what i was doing on that one. I found the CDs that came with my old battered 4x5 intuous2 and installed painter classic on my office laptop. First pic using painter, and only found out how to change brush sizes later.

Aberrant - should have used a mirror... heh. The only landline in the house is downstairs which I had to sit by to manually kickstart the DSL, so wasn't working on my normal machine. Was too irritated and rushed to use reference or spend more time.

Used pic B for reference. About 4 hrs. ...Got lost in the iris. The rest of the pic was about 2 hr., but I kept toying around with different things for the iris and that took way too long. Wish I hadn't made the iris edges so crisp (sigh), but I'm pretty happy with the image anyway.

    I'll have to comment later...
Right now, I've gotta go do some other stuff.

Whew just in time. Some pretty freaky work on this one.

William - Nice work making the eye look moist. Nice iris.
VegasMike - You're freaking me out
Cthogua - Nice. I like the patter/texture you created for the iris.
Sorry don't have time to comment on all of them. Nice work though.

Mine started as a pencil sketch earlier today, then brought it into Photoshop and used it as an underlay for this.

    Probably about 2 hours total
