    Hi!

I feel you could really make this piece work if you fix some of the issues first.

1.You need to first sort out your proportion issues, his body is off balance and skewed to one side. Make sure all the parts line
    up.
    2. Be less sloppy with the rim lighting - right now its just sort of slathered around the edges of the character with a blurry brush. Rim-lighting can give you a chance to really define the small nuances of the body with hard light so being more confident in where you put it will really give the character a much more 3D feel.
    3. You have a good opportunity to create some slick, back lit hair.
    4. With the light coming from the back, don't be afraid to let some detail of your character to slip into the darkness - you do not have to render every single detail for your image to have an impact. I also darkened the center slightly to really give the contrast a push.

I hope the paintover is useful for you. Good luck!

oh come on, in the time it took you to type out " i hear people talk of sergent or sargent. should i hit those? blah blah" you couldve typed "sargent painting" into google and found out for yourself.
or, "best comic artists" and found tonnes of nerds debating the topic, posting images to back their points.
before you start any project, research the shit out of the topic and make a file of things you need.

You want to learn to render? Dig in: http://www.henningludvigsen.com/tutorials/

It's more important to learn anatomy (and lighting), though. You say you have a lack of knowledge, so why not start building that up? Get an anatomy book or Loomis' Figure Drawing For All Its Worth and start studying and copying images. To make believable pictures, you need to feed your imagination with how things actually look.
