hey MAC. yeah, I'm worried this is looking like the end.. oh well.
hard to full crit because, ye, half the pics are missing. but I do see improvements in the hand; and also shading with extra debth, which is good.

a:choose a well-known world famous person. find several ref pictures (just the head & neck will do).
make a few studies of these ref pictures.
post drawings together with ref.
b: with the ref pictures in hand, choose an angle and expression totally different from your ref pictures.
draw this. the object here is to keep the person's face recognisable.

Hey guys! It seems to me like you hadda really awesome study group going here. I would hate for this to die! So I would like to join, if possible
My name is Arthur. I am 18, just started art school and hope to one day be a concept artist for Valve. I expect that this group will give me the inspiration/motivation to work every day.
I feel that my ability to render/shade is probably my greatest strength and my greatest weakness would be anatomy. I suck at anatomy. As far as favorite themes go, I really like environments, sci fi stuff, and juxtapositions between two unlike things, like Cowboys and Aliens and Bioshock.
So guys, whats my first assignment!?
Hey bosque. Ye, it was a good group. But it seems pretty dead now. Maybe there's another you can join?
Warning, I draw babiez
Alright ashess, thank you. Ill keep my eye on this and see if anyone starts coming back![]()
My name is Dan, i am 19 years old, studying a degree in Drawing at University College Falmouth in England. I really want to bring a more computer generated side to my work, and thought that if i upload work here - at least some of the process shall involve a computer. I haven't done Task Zero yet as i am pretty clueless on Photoshop, though i am starting a University course on Photoshop this Friday, so should have it soon.
Here is task 1
Hey Guys here it is, i thought i'd start from the very start of the thread so that even if this thread dies i always have work to do!
Task zero shall be uploaded shortly
Task 2
Task Two
Why is this threat dead? And why aren't there any more projects like these out there?! All i see today in the mentor group is people looking for a mentor,
but people offering their help is nowhere to be found. There's plenty for all of us, why not help?![]()

I'm not sure if this study group is still going but I want to try out the 11 assignments already posted anyway ^^ I need all the motivation I can getPlus I enjoyed spending times reflecting on my influences
Introduce yourself!
Hi, I'm a new member to the forum, I really want to improve my art, and I joined this forum in the hopes of gaining some more motivation and giving me some direction in accomplishing this. I'm currently in university studying animation, and I hope one day I will get a job as an animator! (Here's hoping!).
Explain what do you want to learn here, what do you expect from participating in this group.
I want to really gain a good understanding of the basics. Mainly human anatomy, animal anatomy, heads/faces, hands, feet, perspective, colour, light, etc. and also as well as improving my drawing I would also like to improve my digital colouring skills.
Point out your most important strengths and weaknesses. Try to be honest, fair, but brutal if you feel so.
Weaknesses:
- Confidence. I lack major confidence in myself, which reflects into my art. I want to get to a position where I am happy with my art and I consonantly doubt myself and my abilities.
- My overall basic understanding in foundation knowledge. I tend to try and rush into things, and get upset when they don't work out. I need to learn that things take time, and every mistake ultimately is a positive as it is a learning experience, and I'm learning all the time. I'm also ignorant in historical artist figures, which is why I need to study some art history.
- Drawing from reference. I rely heavily on reference when I draw.
- My lack of motivation - It is low at the moment which causes me to get distracted easily.
- I'm not very confident in my traditional medium skills.
- Heavy lines, need more flow, especially with gesture drawings.
- Years of cartoon style has stuck badly to my drawing habits.
Strengths.
- I love to learn and nothing gets me more excited than seeing improvement.
- I'm passionate and dedicated, and once I get motivated I'm extremely hardworking. I never give up.
Write a thing or two about your favourite themes and/subjects. Things you like to draw the most.
I love drawing cartoons in general, my style has never been particularly very realistic I have always favored cartoons (and until very recently anime).
Visit at least one other member’s sketchbook and point out his/her most important strengths and weaknesses (make your crit in this forum!). Be constructive. Feel free to do this for multiple/all the members (including me )
x Mind if I skip this one, don't feel like I have the knowledge to give critiques as of yet ^^;
My influence map: I really enjoyed this exercise I've never done one if these before and definitely got me inspired reflecting on these. It's funny though just last year this influence map would have looked very different, as I was heavily influenced by anime @___@
I started with the cartoon influence from an early age, then I tried to rid myself of this with anime but now I'm ready to embrace it, as it's what I love the most and also what I'm best atand now I want to improve my foundation knowledge so I can take it further

Although this thread seems dead.. People are still putting in efforts to do similar things such as Hiddles starting a study group, nice one!
I will have to attempt these assignments at one point, soon after my figure studies!

Tips and tutorials to help you create better art!
Introduce yourself!
Hey, I'm Chris a 21 year old games design student from the UK looking to better my artist ability. I'm kind of new to this forum and hope it can help me step my game up! I haven't uploaded any work to ConceptArt yet but here is my DeviantArt page http://garasin.deviantart.com/
Explain what do you want to learn here, what do you expect from participating in this group.
Just like Hiddles, I want a solid understanding of the basics so I have a solid foundation to build on. No short cuts just hard work!
Point out your most important strengths and weaknesses. Try to be honest, fair, but brutal if you feel so.
I think at the minute my biggest strength is anatomy. I haven't got the greatest understanding of it but I feel this is the area where I have the most understanding, and with practice I could greatly improve. My biggest weakness is probably tone and perspective. The two scare me and, to my shame, I have tried to avoid them.
Write a thing or two about your favourite themes and/subjects. Things you like to draw the most.
I love character art and environment art, I love how much of a story all the little details can tell. I also love hearing a song and trying to capture the feeling off it in a single image.
Visit at least one other member’s sketchbook and point out his/her most important strengths and weaknesses.
I've chosen Hiddles, as he seems to be new to this thread like me! Off the bat I have to say it would be fair to take whatever I say with a pinch of salt. I hardly have the ability to give proper advice!
First off, I really like the skeleton in your sketchbook as it shows you're thinking about the underlying structure of how humans are put together.
I'd say improvement could be made on the feet and hands (I know how hard they can be, I have the same problem!) and finally I love the fan art. All the lines are really confident and have a clear likeness off the characters! Well done.
Create your influence map.
Hey man, your from the UK too? Awesome, and your on a games design course? Thanks for the critique on my sketchbook, I appreciate it ;D Gotta keep working hard towards improvement, I need all the advice I can get! Which is why I'm loving this forum, it's really getting me motivated! Seeing as this thread seems pretty dead maybe we could work together on motivating each other to get all the tasks set done? and I recommend you get a sketchbook set up on here too
Also great influence map, very nice! Comic books are a big influence to me too, especially Marvel artists.

Please forgive the quality my scanner isn't working at the minute :'(
All feedback welcome!
I can't see your work D= it's not loaded
Here's mine, I posted it in my sketchbook. I did it a couple weeks ago, but didn't get a chance to upload it before the forum went under construction.

Sorry to present my thing like this. My browser froze and I had to screen cap.
Critique:
Novbert-You're art is really fantastic. I checked out a lot of your stuff you've improved a lot since some of your earlier art. You've made great progress over the years you've drawn. The only thing I can say is pretty much what you said. A lot of your picture look incomplete like you said once you hit a point. I'd love to see what things you have completed.
BGrizzMayne- I think the effort you put into your art is fantastic you're doing very well for someone still new to art. I would say since you're learning to paint on the computer to learn some techniques that other digital painters use. It'll make learning a lot more easier for that. Also try to do some 30 second gesture drawings they helped me a bunch when it came to doing different poses. Also you're doing pretty well with your antomy, just keep practicing and pay close attention to the details of the body, and how it curves.
1. Introduce yourself!
My name is Natalia, my nickname is actually a variation of my last name - if you switch one letter in it in Hebrew, then you get cat-turtle =) A lot of people "discovered" it when they first met me...
I'm 20 years old, I drew all my life but never tried to do it professionally until recently. My goal is to become a professional concept artist.
Explain what do you want to learn here, what do you expect from participating in this group.
I'm feeling a bit lost when it comes to what should I draw, so I want to get the assignments as a push for drawing, a challenge - that's first. I want to receive helpful critique and to see how different people approach the same assignment I do.
Point out your most important strengths and weaknesses. Try to be honest, fair, but brutal if you feel so.
For strength I think I have what you can call a keen eye for color and composition. I sometimes find simple things being very artistically interesting. For example, I can draw a pair of keys laying on the table for hours because their shadow fell in a way I liked on a pizza flayer underneath. That said, but in my works I can't manage to build an interesting composition or not to mess up the colors. I also lack basic knowledge in anatomy, and have a bit of lack of imagination I guess... I am very scared of drawing landscapes and anything that is bigger than a room corner, even though environment concept are these that blow my mind the most. Oh, and I recently bought a Wacom but have yet to figure out how to work with it.
Write a thing or two about your favourite themes and/subjects. Things you like to draw the most.
Actually I'm focusing now mainly on studies, so I have neglected things I like.... I like colorful illustration pieces.
Visit at least one other member’s sketchbook and point out his/her most important strengths and weaknesses (make your crit in this forum!). Be constructive. Feel free to do this for multiple/all the members (including me )
I am working on it...
Create your influence map. You can find a template and examples here but feel free to create your very own version.
A question: Can I post here the old assignments to get critique now? Or should I start from the fresh one?
