Care, the more the merrier! Just add those of us who've already provided our skype IDs and mention you're from the newbie thread on concept art and you'll get added to the group there.
I'm laurie.ashton.farook on skype.
And I'd like to add that I'm impressed that there's no dilly dallying around, it's straight to business without wasting time. So so so happy.![]()
Just add 'harkaibijar' to your skype contacts and I'll add you to the group. Once in the group you can just add everyone there!
And Hiddles, get on Skype - it's your study group, and we've got 4 people in this skype group already!
I'd like to join because I think I need some direction in my studying. Not sure how long I'll stick around once school starts, but we'll see what happens.
Check out my sketchbook! Socially acceptable opportunity to yell at a teenage girl!
Hey! I'll like to join in, I was in a study group some months ago where I practiced some of values and such. But I forgot the name, and also I want to work on anatomy, so if you let me I'll join in!
You chat by skype?
Also, one nice book I'm now reading and try to practice is Figure Drawing - Design and invention by Michael Hampton
And I think that Bridgeman's book are pretty awesome, I like more the bridgeman style than the loomis way.
And also a great page to some basics is www.ctrlpaint.com
Of course you can join! Just add 'Harkaibijar' and I'll add you to the group conversation where you can add everyone else. Nice to have you on board!
I probably should get skype as well now. Seeing as how most of the group is hopping on there. Isn't there a charge now though for conference calls?
Can I still participate if I don't join the skype group?
Check out my sketchbook! Socially acceptable opportunity to yell at a teenage girl!
Skype or no Skype, just join us! All are welcome!
It's Eid today and family is in town for the next week, so I may be a little late doing the assignments and I may not check in that frequently, but never fear, I'm still here and will check in and get the assignments done when I can.![]()
nice on the brigeman link!
@M-Min, only charges if you get like 100 something people in the call.. it's a pretty stupid number, whatever it is. I've had uncharged calls in the 15-20 people range though. With so many people doing video tutorials and others listening to music, it's more for the instant text responses and sharing of what we're doing than it is about making skype calls at the moment.
We're currently up to 7 people in this skype group! (including myself). Still missing the leader of the study group however *cough* Hiddles *cough*.
Hey guys, I joined CA ages ago with great intentions but I haven't posted as often as I should have.
I think a study group is a great idea, just wondering of I can join?
I'm reading through that one as well! Liking it so far. Another book I found helpful is See, Feel, Trace, Draw It by Sheldon Borenstein.
@OldManPsylus thanks for the info. their website's not very clear on what's free and what's not. i've never used skype before so it'll be interesting to see how it turns out.
skype name's : cynnex
Hello little ones!
If there's any teens among you (13-19 years old), we'd love to have you pop in on the Teen Challenge!
For those of you that get a bit intimidated with this whole "challenge" thing, it's more about having fun and actually doing some art, than winning. You don't even have to submit your piece for the poll if you feel it's not good enough! The important thing is drawing a lot and getting solid feedback.![]()
Nyctalgia
As I expect to start seeing this week's assignments trickle in, I guess I'll start things off!
Before you ask, shading and/or coloring was not in the assignment.
Idea: We might want to, when critiquing assignments, go to the author's SB to comment. That way this forum doesn't get completely flooded when turn-in day rolls around. Just make sure that when you turn in work here, that you also update your SB with the assignment![]()

Hi
I am a long time member of the forums, but have so far been lurking, in awe, wishing I was half as good as some of the people on here.
I used to have such passion for drawing and painting when I was younger, when I was blissfully ignorant about how poor my drawings were. I really want that desire back to create art, and I would love to be a part of the study group.
I hope it's not too late to join?
What format will you all be using? Will you be sketching digitally or on paper? Does it matter?
Have you been using the skype group? Would it be worth getting a log-on for it?
i guess i kinda cheated on this one a little bit but eeehhhh

@Epona
1.Too late to join the study group? Never! Though depending on your schedule it might be a little tough to complete the first assignment. That's alright though, no harm done if you don't get that in on time.
2.The world of concept art is very quickly becoming an almost purely digital medium. That said, this is just a study group, you can use whatever medium you like!(You will need some way of sharing your progress)
3. We currently have 9 people in our study group's skype. I have personally found it extremely useful for getting instant feedback and getting to know my fellow artists. I would say, like these forums, it is an invaluable tool to have at our disposal - especially seeing as it's completely free.
Hope to see you stick with us, I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun. Don't forget to add 'harkaibijar' when you do get skype so I can add you to the group!
Of course your not too lateThis study group is open to everyone
and I understand where your coming from, the only way to improve is to keep drawing, and many are discouraged by others but you should be encouraged to improve ^^ Many people give up because they think they will never be at a level as the ones they admire, but those you admire are just the ones who never gave up

Both formats are acceptableand we do have a skype group going not all members are required to join, I'm not on there yet but I will be hopefully getting an account soon.
Welcome and hope this study group will get you motivated to start drawing again ^_____^

Thanks for having me, and for adding me to the Skype group!
Some really nice starts there, well done!
I created a sketchbook for my contributions http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=247862
I need to find out how to scan properly, the details are totally lost.
Finished mine! Might do another arm or two for tomorrow. I botched one of the ones I had originally planned to share. Link to my sketchbook in my signature.
Check out my sketchbook! Socially acceptable opportunity to yell at a teenage girl!
Arms out of an anatomy book i have, legs from the CGcookie tutorial cause the book didn't have a good turnaround for them.
Yea, the CGcookie ones are more about being able get the right proportions and being able to shade the right areas. They're for the most part right on, but they do have a muscle or two out of place if you're really interested in the raw anatomy of it.
I'm not sure how much a concept artist would ever need to know the absolute exact location/name of every muscle in the body. Just the ones that dictate how we move, and how our skin receives lighting. To that effect, I think the CGcookie tutorials are great. They simply down a little bit of the muscle and tendon structures so that they're easier to remember, but keeps your proportions correct.
Oldmanpsylus:
Leg bone structure looks good, its important tho to realise how far the bone on the left of the knee sticks out. its basically visible as the edge of our leg. The calf muscle looks a little less ovally on the back view of the leg. also the tendond goes down the middle rite down to the foot.
Im not sure about this but i swear when the arm is in side view the bones cross. I will check it out and get bak to you. muscles look good.i would say the tricep long bit looks a bit thin.
M-Min:
no need ot name everything unless it helps ya. i would watch the proportions the side leg looks a little thin compared to the other legs.great positioning tho.
On the arms i think the flexors should be bigger or more round.
Keeptime:
nice bone structure. great shading. hard to see whats going on tho
Azimuth:
Very nice simple but clear. proportions looks great, legs missing the front muscles on the shin.
Heres mine sorry its very bad... no time this week. 1 thing i did learn.
Biceps = two muscles
triceps = three muscles.
Who would have guessed.
Hey guys, I'm not sure if I have time to upload these to my sketchbook so I'll prob do that tomorrow if that's alright.
Also my sketchbook and my scanner aren't the best of friends so sorry if the scans are a bit wonky.
I started drawing the bones of the leg first so they're a bit stiff (no pun intended)
Then onto the muscles.
I couldn't find reference for a side view of the arm.![]()
And finally the muscles of the arm.
I have to say this was really fun, looking forward to the nest assignment!!!![]()
Also is it alright if we critique things relevant to the study group in this thread? That way we can keep all the assignments and crits in one place so it's easy to look over later on and people looking at this thread but not participating can observe and learn too.
I'm easy with anything thoughJust a thought.
Yeah that's a good idea, I fine with that
Looking greatI had fun with this, I did some studies from Bridgman, I did a couple pages so I uploaded it to my sketchbook (it's not online yet though as it needs to be approved to by a mod @___@ ) Hopefully it won't be too long. Going to try and do one more study but might have to upload tomorrow =___=

Looking great! I like that you keep your proportions consistent. Thats definitely something that's difficult to achieve (Consistency is not my strong point!)
The only thing I can really crit is that the bones of the leg seem just a little bit thin but other than that, great job!
M-Min
Good work! Very comprehensive!I would watch out for measurements and proportions though.
Sometimes our brains can trick us into thinking that the distance between points is greater or shorter than it actually is.
The best way to overcome this, I think, is to measure things relative to each other. As in, measure the tibia in relation to the femur, etc.
The proportion of things will work out over time if you measure things against each other.
Hope that makes sense
keeptime
Nice use of colour!I really like the shading on the bones. Just be sure to watch the balance of the legs.
They seem to be leaning a little to the right in the middle and right drawings.
Azimuth
Looks good! The only crit I have would be to maybe make your lines more confident but that's a technical issue that will sort itself out with time and practice
Care
Another nice use of colour to differentiate the muscles!
At first I thought the legs were a bit short but I think thats because I was measuring them against the arms or something. When I covered the arms and looked just at the legs it seemed fine. Well done!
Also if anyone is interested I found a little online game that helps you learn the bones of the skeleton. You can check it out here.
They have a game based on the muscular system too.

Going to try and do some more today. Also let's start thinking about our next assignment! Any suggestions?
