Rinus Sketchbook

Hello guys
First of all, I'm kind of new in here, I've had an account until 8 years ago or something like that, and I've been checking out the forums every once in a while since. My Name is Rino or Rinu, I'm 25 years old, living in Switzerland and I am working as a Graphic Designer, planning to be a full time Graphic Designer / Illustrator / Concept Artist some day.

I thought it best to open up a sketchbook in here to get some critique to my work, so I know what I have to work on. These are just some random Sketches yet, I didn't paint a full image since a long long time ago.

Is it okay if I leave my watermarks in the pictures? I just prepared it for my blog like this but I can remove it if it's distracting.

The guy in the forest and the war tree are something for a comic idea I've once had. In the end there are "making of"s from the floating guy and the pencil warrior.

Hi Rinu
Great that you finally started a sketchbook! The creatures look really cool, and no I didn't find the watermark distracting (dunno bout the others), in fact I thought it worked quite well with the images

The stable sketch is the closest I've come to a full drawing in terms of composition and storytelling. It should depict a strange newborn animal laying in a stable being observed by a crow.

The idea for the living stone is from some DSG I think, but it never got out of the sketch phase. In the red thing I tried to practise my shading techniques.

The insect merchant is a character that I did a month ago and the second one is a sketch of a zombie-monkey-ish thing

Here's a burnt falconer as an entry to the ChOW#299, a ghostly member of the royal court.

My choice was a falconer that died together with his bird in a fire.

I guess I wanted to do to much at once, and got lost somewhere.

I did the left one in color first, but wasnt content with the pose, so I worked it over and ended up with the one on the right, with more comic-style proportions (notice the falcon looking like a grilled chicken). I was still not satisfied and worked on some silhouettes, ending up with a more painful pose, resembling the burning of the character.

It was a fun challenge, and very interesting to research the costumes and the bird.

Didn't draw much in the last months. Finally I got into painting a bit more again, so here's a werewolf.

For a Tattoo inspiration for someone I know, I had to doodle some owls

Here's some Value study, where I tried to copy the values of the reference, without using the eye dropper tool of course.



Then there's some rogue-like character, I've had some trouble getting the values right on the whole body.



And some quick underwater creature, just wanted to color something, hence the random sketch



I would love to hear some critique on those!

An Illustration for a mountainbike dirt jump event in my hometown. I put over 40 hours of work into this, not including the logo.

Well, here's a bunch of scans from my actual sketchbook. The poses are from the 60-second-drawing-mode of posemaniacs.org, the tree is right in front of my apartment, and the reference for the portrait of the smiling guy is from the drawing script.

A quick and dirty little illustration for a small mailing. Drawn with a ballpen on paper, the cardboard is added digitally. (how cheap, I know)

Finally got to do a quick little character again. Messed around with a few techniques and this is what came out: A grumpy piglet

A really quick random scribble which developed in this kind of interesting character. I don't know him yet, but he looks kind of sad. As far as I know he's some kind of farmer as well, maybe he is farming worms with this hack tool. Maybe I'll meet him again in another sketch we'll see…
