There are so many so many videos and books on vilppu style gesture .. from so many different teachers but as far as I can see there is litteraly nothing on Watts style quick sketch like this

There seem to be many practitioners on this site. All I really know are Chris Legaspi's videos which are great and everything but I need more.

Are there any videos or books out there with this style quick sketch using Conte on Newsprint. Iv have been wanting to learn it for ages.


I should add I have seen EM Gists PDFs on this as well which are excellent but I would love some vids or a book.

Is it a style or a method? In the first case, don't expect tutorials. In the second case, it might be so general it all boils down to well-known methods like Nicolaides, Vilppu...

It seems to be that there is very clear procedure used. Like Vilppu has .. only its clearly different.

If you check out Ryan Woodward he is amazing with quick conte sketching. Also he has a big 222P book on the subject. Here. Hope that helps.

Check out Glen Orbik vids and Nathan Fowkes too Jeff Watts used to have a booklet on his method that he gave out to students. You could call Watts atelier and see if they would sell you one. I got mine from him at a workshop he taught at EA . The Faragasso book Mastering Drawing from Life Memory and Imagination is the best book on the Reilly Method, there was some rumblings about reprinting it and his other book A Student Guide to Painting a few years ago but as far as I know it hasn't happened yet.

Man I love ryan woodward .. he is one of my faves and 'thought of you' is one of my all time faveorite animations. Its quite beautiful. He book is great and I recommend it. Would so love to draw like him.

I also adore Nathan Fowkes.

Is the Faragasso book worth getting? Does it cover figure quick sketch in depth? It really is the only thing that I am currently interested in. There is loads of stuff already out their for the Reilly head abstractions, Ron Lemen's Gnomon DVD is superb for this.

Faragasso's drawing book covers lots of things in depth, maybe too much depth in some cases, but what came to be known as "quick sketch" in the California, Fixler branch of the Reilly legacy isn't really one of them. He does cover the six-line figure abstraction, the importance of the action (Reilly's preferred term for gesture), forms/planes/shadows, and growth patterns, but you have to put all the pieces together yourself. The best demonstration of how to build a figure on the six lines is probably an article Ron Lemen did for ImagineFX a while back.

Chris Legaspi has been doing a weekly webinar and he has recently covered the Reilly/Quick Sketch method over a series of videos. I've attended the last few of these and have learned so much.

Check out the head drawing videos there; it's covered really well.

closest I've found to video demonstrations on the method online.
The only problem with the videos are that they do not cater to the beginning student as the instructor is quite advanced. He starts from the specific to the whole. In my time at Watts we would use the reilly abstrations for the figure first, always moving from head to neck to shoulders, crotch then ground. Jeff would repeat this phrase often that it is still stuck in my mind. Then we would build the simple forms of structure over the the abstraction framework. After this we would map the shadows in. Filling in the shadows would only be done if you were quick enough to do all this within the time limit of the pose. Otherwise it was left as is or the shadows could be blocked in later during the break, as all the information needed on drawing was already there.
