Really like the coloring, and especially the lighting on the last finished sketch. The texture you've used on it looks good, too.

(Jag fattade visst aldrig att du är svensk. Smaaarrrt!)

Anyways, keep up the good job!

Your heads are showing serious improvement... the ones in post 428 are especially strong. I really like your latest few character drawings too; they're super energetic. I especially like the jumping one, and two in the latest post - close character interaction like that is hard to draw, but you pulled it off.

the 4 greyscale characters are commissions, some inuyasha, kenshin and ff7 fanart and rest is my own silly characters x)

watch your value scale on those gray scale ones, you're compressing a full value range into them when it's not really necessary and takes away from the image. desaturate one of your color ones and see how you used a much shorter range to much greater effect.

i wouldn't say you're clueless about value at all, your color images for the most part show a really good control of it, it's most likely just a disconnect between working intuitively in color and not understanding how to apply that to greyscale.

if you do a study of a color image and then do it again after desaturating the reference you start to understand how values work under colors. something that's a shade of dark red for instance might be a base value of 60 grey, use that grey as your staring point and shade or highlight from there.

the characters you had before look as if they are entirely 50% grey with a spotlight evenly hitting every part of their body and costume. working on something like this you need to keep in mind a couple of things:

how is the value structure affecting the design and how the viewer's eye is moving over my character - areas of high contrast are going to draw the viewer's eye immediately, you can use that to your benefit and prioritize what you want to be seen (ie, in the mage, you would want to draw the viewer to the staff with the magic, down to her face, then down to her costume. right now the areas with the most contrast are the bottom of her dress and right under her boobs. your eye goes there first when it is not the focus of the drawing. did a bit of a sloppy paintover)

the values should describe the materials you are painting - prom expalins this better than I ever could http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm#materials and http://androidarts.com/art_tut.htm#light_stuff that whole page is gold and worth a read or two if you haven't seen it before.

anyway sorry to go so long winded on you and i hope this helps

Seems like some fun stuff is happening here with all the different styles and characters! And your Zelda Samuraidesign gave me a smile! Great idea, I love Zelda's dress, especially the skirt. Ah, it's just a pleasure to take a look at your work.

Congrats regarding the job! How is it going? Do you learn a lot, animating the whole day?
