    ROUND #270 - D&D Variants Round 3/3

Dungeons & Dragons is home to a myriad of monsters pulled from myth and folklore and a few of it’s own creation. Flipping through volume upon volume of monsters for players to confront there are always a few that stick out. Monsters we consider “classics” in the context of D&D. Last summer we did a series of rounds all focused on the central theme of familiars. This year we’re going to be taking classic monsters of the D&D universe, and giving them a little twist. Again, there will be three rounds, three D&D monsters and three twists given to them.

    topic:

    Chaos Tarrasque

The Tarasque has it’s origins in French folklore, as a river monster. In Dungeons and Dragons it has a bit of a different reputation. The Tarrasque is the monster that cannot be stopped, and cannot be killed. This is a colossal beast with immunity to almost all kinds of magic and incredible regenerative ability. The only measure preventing the Tarrasque from truly destroying everything remotely edible (and everything surrounding anything remotely edible within a several mile radius) is that the Tarrasque spends almost all of it’s time asleep. Waking every few years for just a few days to rampage around like the monster it was meant to be. As physical descriptions go, the Tarrasque has, in D&D always been a creature of towering height (at least 40’/13-14m), it’s somewhat reptilian in form, covered in horns and has a thick carapace; that’s all I’m going to give you this week, so be creative.

Your task this week is to create your very own Tarrasque. The twist this week is that your Tarrasque has been subject to the laws of the plane of chaos. After a brief stint there, the creature has been subject to all manner of mutations: limbs, mouths and eyes where they don’t belong, gaudy changes of colour and pattern, absurd proportional shifts. It’s really up to you the degree to which your Tarrasque has been twisted and mutated by the plane of chaos, but they should at least be visibly mutated (if not actively be mutating) in some way.

    Wiki info:
    D&D Monster:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarrasq...s_%26_Dragons)
    Traditionally: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tarasque

    Requirements this week:
    - Your creature must be large (at least 40’ tall), scaly and covered in horns.

    - Your creature should have mutations which either twist or add on to it’s form in some significant way.

    - Your creature should be recognizable as the D&D monster: The Tarrasque.

    Deadline:

    August 15th, 7:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    WIP-thumbnails, lines

Here's the beginnings of my entry. Did a page of crude silhouettes to feel for the overall form and stuck several together into this nasty customer. It was my first time doing a sketch in photoshop with light blue, printing it out, inking by hand right there on the page and scanning it back in. I must say I'm pleased with how clean it came back to me; the blue dropped right out with a Levels adjustment.

    @McJimbo

could l suggest maybe looking at big creatures like elephants/rhinos and whales to get inspiration from? a big animal wouldn't be able to support its weight and organs would be crushed with some of your silhouettes. think tonnes of mass being held up by tiny legs...they would snap! When making your silhouettes, try going for bigger shapes. the feet if its terrestrial should have a feel of balancing out the weight. extremes of flat foot (bear/elephants) to pinpoint (crab) work well. you might even make it not carry its weight on its legs at all! think a crocodile/whale

the ink drawing has gone a bit too far from the Tarrasque base. looks closer to being a chimera of a frog and cow.

if you make the first silhouettes head actually on the ground, l think that would be interesting!

I mean no harm with my crit, l just want to see you do well considering the effort you're putting in and thought l could offer something

Meteor Panda - You'll note it says "at least", i.e. 40 ft. is the minimum height. I have said nothing about maximums.

Here's a wip. I didn't account for the chaos theme from the outset so i'm having some trouble getting it to gel with the rest of the image.

Does this thing need visible walking legs? Or will a slithering mess of limbs suffice?
