heyo!

17 year old artist here, just got myself my first pen tablet(Wacom Bamboo Pen and Touch) and im loving it and diving into the world of digital art. This shit is hard as hell just figuring out comfortable brush settings was beyond frustrating. Thank god for sites like Ctrl paint and Conceptart.

Here's a couple stuff I've did since I got the tablet a couple days ago.
the elf man thing was cool and i kept thinking something was missing so i just used a bunch of random brushes all over i and then I realized what was originally missing, the highlights!o well. Didn't really render the ear either

oh god this shit is terrible, form value,opactiy flow everything with brushes and layers and blending options is so hard and confusing...

Nice work thus far,that last sketch page was especially fun. I would be interested to see some traditional pencil+paper work from you. Helps give a better idea of what your strong points are without the magical digital undo option.

AustenFM- thanks, i only have one physical sketchbook since I had to dump the others and that's in pretty rough shape, spilled paint all over it. It's also kinda hard for me to get my hand on materials so most of the shit I post will probably be digital.


anyway, I figured I was approaching learning how to paint all wrong, I thought I could wing it but now I realize i'm gonna have to learn it the same way I learned how to draw, by drawing tons of shit so imma start painting a bunch of shit. Here's my first really study I guess.

To change the thread thumbnail, you have to change the pictures attached to your first post, I think its the first pic you have attached is the one that shows up.

Anyway, good start man, the colours on those eyes look expecially nice. Keep studying dude, maybe check out loomis and bridgman, you know the old standards.

still learning, can anyone tell me their techniques to blend colors/shades? you know, how to make the stuff smoother.

wow nice work so far! you don't need to blend colours, i like how you clean block in colours in post #9! (blending colours basically with lower pen pressure! (::

ozark- Yea CTRL Paint is awesome, as well as Feng Zhu, I saw those tuts before and they never really clicked to me or felt fun but I found a tutorial on Enliighten.com and it seems like a perfect fit for me, thanks man.

Dude, if you want softer blends, use a soft round brush, and I dunno just lower your opacity. That's probably the easiest way, theres honestly a million and one ways to do it though. But I mean it's a lot of trial and error, just keep trying.

for lovecastle studies: i always scaled the browser window to half my monitor scale and at the other half there is the photoshop canvas. worked pretty well so far (but now i'm back to using pen and paper for studies^.^)

question though, it's hard for me to represent the lines in my line drawing with paint. For example when I draw a wrinkly old guy should I make the actual wrinkle lines of my line drawing a darker version of the skin tone I choose(make the wrinkle lighter or darker, or more saturated depending on the lighting)? or are the lines represented by paint just shadows(or highlights)?
