I really love your use of colour. Keep it up!
I really love your use of colour. Keep it up!
@kimozabbi Thanks man, I'll have to look out for that book, I'd love to know more about Sorolla
@Jarrad Daaamn... Yeah, I see it now. I wonder why it looks in frontThanks dude, will investigate.
@Pete Thanks mate
@Aquaticdog Thanks! It's too late to stop now :o
Got gloominati's armour ref from his blog, some really nice pics in there...
This one is taking ages. I had to stop because it's getting cartoony and I can't seem to recover it. I think it's because I'm using random colours and values in the dark shadows. And the reflections are all smudged to hell blah. Think I gained a little understanding though. I'm trying to switch between all the different ways you can think about each part of the scene (flat shapes, spheres, "looks like x", neg space, etc.).
Some thumbs from imagination, trying to get the hang of those typical action-y character concept poses. Half of them look like they have rickets x)
Also started another skull photostudy...
More thumbs, more skulls. Symmetry is fun...
Skull doesn't sit well with the background, not really sure what's going on there. I didn't get the colour of the cloth very close, maybe the colour relationships (shadow-light) disagree between the cloth and the skull. Also having trouble with the nose and teeth, will do a bit more on this one.
Thumbs look great. I thought that the skull is a photo, but as you said the skull doesn't fit well with the background. Anyway good job!
Lovein those silhouettes! Your knight is amazing!
Thanks guys
Been trying to do more imagination stuff. Did lots of thumbs today, but they're very abstract and I don't think anyone is going to be able to tell what they're supposed to be. I worked a couple up into sketches, think the last one is strongest (or least weak, at any rate). Need to crop it larger and work out what the rest of the body is doing:
Yeah wtf! good stuff from you lately dude. The brush strokes on the armor=sick and the spaceship and stuff is cool, I didnt get that far into alchemy/ looks sweet!
keep pushing

Thanks man.
Blah, rsi. Working left handed is very slow -_- Some more thumbs from imagination.
man that ship and dragon are killer! so clean! You have rsi!?!? Is it from drawing? Do you stretch regularly and junk?
Are the thumbs done for something specific? They are really cool!
don't blow out your wrist!
Thanks dude, yeah using a break timer and doing stretches and all that. Hoping it's just a pulled muscle or something, I can flex my wrist but I can barely extend it at all.
Did lots of little composition thumbs today, and combined a few of them into a slightly more detailed sketch.
Damn if you did those thumnails with your left hand when your right handed that is DAMN impressive sir.
Hey man, thanks for that paint over you did for me! It helped a great deal; and also sorry for the late reply, Ive been a little buisy these days
Love your studies, the dragons blew my freaking mind. Theyre those kind of sketches that id print on poster paper and hang on my walls! Very gestural and visceral, I like them
your vehicles sketches are also very good...I can't really critique anything right now, this sketchbook is really great overall, keep working on it!![]()
@Pete Thanks mate, going left handed doesn't seem to be any harder, just frustratingly slow since it takes 20+ attempts to get close to what you're going for.
@Sandyman Thanks man, I'm glad that was helpful. It really helped me start thinking more about depth and managing value groups (eg foreground/mid/bg, etc).
Riiight, it's been a while D:
My wrist is still a bit messed up, but I'm hoping it's more to do with juggling than drawing. I've stopped doing clubs for now, which sucks, but i can draw properly for a couple of hours a day. So yay, back to the grind![]()
Stopping to see what's going on here. I read that you have some problems with wrist, so I hope you are fine now. You are right clubs suck a lot, drawing is much better.
Thanks for steps, it seems that your enviros are based on random shapes or blocks of colour and some overlaid texture, right? They came out very nicely.
sickest sketchbook ive seen, its got everything from people to environments!!
great studies you have here, i like what youre doing with the solid flat blocks of colour and i think i might try the same
Wow this sketchbook is amazing, thanks allot for posting! You have given me so many ideas for studies i Can do now. The work you do is just amazing! I'm sorry you are having wrist problems,_ I Been having them myself as well. I got Mine from playing the guitar Impropely and using a mouse the wrong way while playing MMOs, I Started doing some stretches that help really good. Its like physical therapy type stuff. Pretty cool, keep up the good work!!!
@blu01 Thanks mate. What I tend to do at the moment is lots of really simple thumbs. Like 3 values and a big blocky opaque brush. Then I choose one I like and scale it up, and use the lasso tool, vector shapes, etc. to add some variety and try and indicate depth. If it all seems to be working, I can continue with painting and photobashing and fun stuff like that.
@Stpete heh, you made my day
@aks9 Thanksgive it a go, it's fun to experiment with this stuff.
@Joe777k7 Thanks man, take care of your wrists. Wanker's cramp is a bitch :p
I did a perspective set up for this (honest!), but got a bit messed up, especially on the wheels:
yo mang. i like your last environment!! My composition skills are pretty weak, but I feel like maybe the top left area is a bit distracting. did you use texturesÉ... keyboard is french right now..
I`m going to san diego in a week for 2 months so I`ll be posting even less!
edit: whoah you just posted RIGHT before i did!
Those character silhouettes are awesome. Easily readable.
Oh don`t worry! I`m going there to study art!![]()
@Jarrad Yeah, used photo textures (brick wall and a mountain). I see what you mean about the composition, it's very empty up there! Good luck, keep us updated
@Hayden Thanks man
Would like to get back into anatomy/figure studies again... Some quick photostudies:
You last vehicle is bad ass. Do u use photos for those leg studies?
great stuff, nice studies and some good colors!
nice man, loving that sketch on post #79, that armor study came out really nice, and so did the skull ones... no critics, i'm just enjoying the updates, keep it up!
Thanks guys
@Pete Yeah, the legs & figures are photo studies.
A few more quick photo studies. Feel a bit stupid looking back over what I've done. I had intended to work towards becoming a concept artist (hopefully for movies), but I've done fuck all designing since I started learning how to draw. There will be more iterative design stuff in future :|
Thanks for the tips on my sketchbook. Latest stuff is looking great too.
Don't be so hard on yourself! I am personally interested in have a good grasp of the fundamentals before focusing that much on design. Not to say that's what you have to do, but it seems like If one doesn't have a solid understanding of light and form, strong colour sense, perspective, anatomy, etc and are able to execute them from memory, then your designs may not come across due to fundamental errors. At the same time, I don't think anyone gets to a point with technique where they are "done" so it depends on the individual to decide When he/she reached a point where his/her technique feels strong enough to start creating/experimenting with forms, people, designs, and all of that good stuff. I personally like to experiment with designs, and just create every so often to see what new things have been assimilated into my memory banks. In my journey at this moment, I have a heavy emphasis on technique. I think that when my technique becomes stronger, the transition over to more designing and exploration will come naturally. I really hope that this has helped you in some way!!
woo flying out tomorrow! getting up at 5:00am![]()
the helicopter thumb and the last few environments are dope
howz the wrist
