Awwww I hoped for an another stream that I can watch during work, I guess you're not THAT free as of yet

Your colors look pretty good, but there are still problems with the form in your figures. Maybe this will help - When I do bridgman or figure studies, I sometimes just try to replicate whatever I tried to "copy" without a reference. I think it strengthens your understanding. Hope this serves as anything helpful.

    Cheers

Kerah Sorry man, I will stream way more when I have gained my freedom. I am thinking of doing a massive themed stream when I am done with that internship. I do not know what theme I should choose. Gundams? Naked people? :V Hamstuuurs? eeuh
Copy without reference? HOw does that work? You look at it and put it away then? But then I forget it right away I think... My memory is really bad. XD

n1frit LOL seriously? I have the idea I barely draw nowadays. спасибо :>

Hey, you have a lot of good studies here. You're working hard and that is good, but I think you're not really using your studies well.

Please take what I am saying with a grain of salt since I am very much a beginner, but I think what Kerah said makes a lot of sense for where you are at right now. You seem to be just doing studies for the sakes of doing studies, copying anatomy just to copy anatomy and you’re not really applying the stuff you’re learning. I will try to explain what I mean by this, it will be a long post and it’s probably filled with crap, but I will try to explain something I realized a while back and helped me improve enormously so maybe it will help you too. I don’t want to offend you, just offer some insight that might help.

    So…

I was looking a few pages back and you have all these great studies of naked people in dynamic poses. While they are not perfect they show a lot of good details, but you never use these details that you are learning from them. For example you do some pretty anatomically correct work of how a leg looks but then in your drawing of a boy in post #854 his legs are just straight lines. I know it's a WIP and he's wearing pants and it's not the same pose like the naked guys you're studying, but what's the point of studying if it doesn't influence your personal work? I mean if doing 3 copies after a naked guy won’t make your drawing of a guy look better something is not right.

The ultimate goal of studies is to help you create better work out of your imagination and right now I see a bit of a detachment between the two. It’s almost like you are doing the studies, putting them away/ forgetting what they are supposed to teach you then working on your personal/ imagination stuff.

Let me give you another example. You have pages of nose studies copied from Bridgman, but the noses you draw on your people in your sketchbook are all simple anime noses composed out of two lines. The Bridgman noses look great, but if copying them won’t help you make better looking noses on the people you sketch in pen… well what’s the point of studying for hours? You don’t want to become a human Xerox machine, you want to be able to draw awesome stuff from imagination, right?

I am not sure if this makes sense, but what I’m trying to say is that I see all this work you’re doing but it doesn’t seem to translate to great improvements in your personal work. Don’t get me wrong you improved from when you started, your colors are better and your sense of proportion has come along very well. But for the amount of effort you’re putting into this, for all the still life studies and anatomy copies you did I feel your personal images should be much better.

A while back I used to do this thing where I would study for hours, without really thinking about what I was doing. I would just copy anatomy over and over again without wondering why I did it or how it was benefiting me and I hoped that someday all of a sudden I’d be good. But that is not how this works, the point of all of this is to learn how to draw and you can only do that if you actually learn. All that work I did, didn’t really help me that much, because I wasn’t learning anything from it I was just going through the motions. And I think you are in the same position.

At one point I changed my way of studying. Instead of copying Bridgman I’d say: “Hey I want to draw a cool robot woman image. What do I need to know to do that? Well I should learn how an arm looks. So I would draw an arm, but really spending time on it, thinking about every step. Why am I drawing this line here? What muscle is underneath here, how does this compare to the length of the hand? Constantly asking myself what I was doing. Then I would put the book away and would try drawing that arm again on a character, trying to remember as many of the thoughts about the process as possible. When I was done I would compare it to the book. What did I do wrong? Why? What part of my mental process was wrong? Then I’d do it again and again until I learned how to draw a more or less realistic arm from imagination.
It’s like learning a new language. Right now you are copying words from a dictionary, but instead of using them in sentences or in conversation you just put the dictionary away and try to do your best with half remembered stuff. You say that when you put the reference away you forget right away, that to me is a clear sign that you are not thinking enough about what you are doing when studying. Also you should do it more (putting the reference away after you copy the image once), because that’s the only way to train your memory and learn.

I hope this huge rant makes some sense and helps you think about what you are studying and why. There should be a purpose for every study you do, an application for it; otherwise your brain will just forget it and your drawings from imagination will not improve

    Good luck.

I agree with dracken; when you draw something from imagination try to find references like poses from bridgman, photos etc. It's helpful, quality of work improves dramatically and when you apply your studies you learn more. Good luck and, most important, have fun drawing!

Man you got an awesome critique from Dracken! He's given you the key, now you gotta use it.

Thats why i like the bloodsports contests so much. they force you to include relevant studies that you'd apply to the final image.

    Hi there
    thanks for visiting my sketchbook!
Some of these studies are really really good! Good proportions and values.
Your stuff from imagination is really stiff most of the time, though. Remember that both bones and flesh are never straight lines. Don't be afraid of weird poses with a lot of foreshortening and whatnot. Try to bring the movement in poses across rather than figures "posing" for you.
What did the figure look like 1 second before or 1 second after your picture?
I'd suggest that you do some gestures to loosen you up before working on a more time confusing piece. Try to think in curves rather than straight lines.

    Hope that helps

I really like the reflection on cosmonaut's helmet.
There are some things I noticed in your last picture.
    - I think that the man's face isn't very well lighted. Try to check loomis's facial planes.
    - Watch your perspective.
    - The character shouldn't be at the centre of image
    - The lightest part of container is on the same level as character (out of picture)
    - Stronger shadow of character
It seems that you update regularly, which is great. Keep it up!

@blu01: thank you :> I will keep those things in mind for the next picture. There was indeed no perspective at all xD

Okay... Today was funny, my parents wanted me to go get a haircut but all hairdressers did not have time for me and did not want to cut my hair.
