Eraser tool - change settings

Is there any way to change the settings of the eraser?

Not the one in the "brushes category", but the eraser tool, (also in use if u use the back end of ur wacom pen or press "n")!

I have not found any way to configure it, f.e. to be pressure sensitive to opacity, but not for size.

By default, it's set to be pressure sensitive for size control, i don't want that.

And I don't want to use the erasers in the brush category, because I can't map them to a button on my wacom like I do with the standart eraser.

Anybody has got a clue?

Go to this folder: C:\Program Files\Corel\Painter12\Resources\12.0\Substituted Brushes\Erasers

In there you will find the hard and soft eraser variants used for the tool -- you can edit the XML file manually or you can simply create new variants (with the same name) and drop them into that folder.

hmm, none of the settings in the file seems to affect the size/pressure thing.

In fact, it seems to be off already in the settings (pressure-radius="False"),

the only other thing I'Ve found would be radius-animator="pressure", which, even set to "None", doesn't change this behaviour.


hmm, i wonder, corel made evrything so customizeable, but the erasertool seems to be left out, altough it's pretty important....

If you aren't familiar with the Brush XML structure you are better off just creating a new brush variant the regular way and dropping it into that folder.

OK -- I take that back... it used to work. I'll have to investigate and get back to you.

What operating system are you on?

You'll need to drop the modified brushes into the workspace Substituted Brushes>Erasers folder if you've used the eraser tool even once because those XML files are automatically generated for the workspace (even if you delete them).

On Windows XP that would be in:

C:\Documents and Settings\*your user login*\Application Data\Corel\Painter 12\*your workspace*\Substituted Brushes\Erasers

On Windows 7 that would be in:

C:\Users\*your user login*\AppData\Roaming\Corel\Painter 12\*your workspace*\Substituted Brushes\Erasers


What I did is use the Real Hard Eraser & Real Soft Eraser variants and dropped them into the above folder -- deleted the original files and renamed them to Soft Eraser & Hard Eraser... after that start Painter and you should have your eraser tool using the properties of the Real Hard Eraser and Real Soft Eraser variants. (see attached)

BTW, if you want to try something trippy you can drop any 2 brushes into that folder and rename them and it will use them for the eraser tool (although Painter will complain about it at first).

I tried the Real Hard and Soft Conte and it works fine... a cool thing is you can set the "eraser" end of the wacom for one color and the eraser tool versions for another.

Have you got it working yet Goliath? The replacing the brush didn't work for me. I went into the .xml and found the part you need to change.
