How to apply texture brushes? SOS

I've always tried to apply the texture brushes in my paintings, but always go wrong ... always appear as overlayed.
There is a tutorial to learn how to do it? or could someone please explain how you apply them?

Set brush mode to height and control to pressure. In this case, I'm using a canvas texture.

Hey thanks for that quick tip on settings, that really helped me - I always used Painter for Paper Textures, just didn't know how it was done in PS.
