I'm a noob in matte painting too. It looks like photos of snow, trees, and sky combined with some tombstones painted on. Looks fine tho--but I don't know if you need permission to use those photos?

So you manipulate photos big deal. You want to be a photographer? Anyone with Photoshop can do this including my grandmother.

If you do Matte Painting Yah you have to use photos. It takes to long not to use them in a work setting. It takes mad rendering skills and everything else. A good painting foundation to start the painting then.. apply photos where needed for texturing use etc.
