The studies are really really good!
I wish your stuff from imagination was as precise.
Those skull studies are gonna help a lot with proportions but so far you still struggle with construction. Try some different angles once you feel like you're gotten down the basic front and side view.
When shading try to think beyond the 2d shape of objects. When looking at a torso for example try to think of the big shapes first, then the small ones.
Abs are a comparably unimportant part of the main structure of a torso.

Hope that helps Keep up the good work!

    @Xelar: Thanks for dropping by!
Yeah,I'm having problems working from imagination but I didn't try doing it so much lately so there are obviously no signs of improvement in that area.I've been solely using photo reference over the last month or so and I'm going to start drawing from life soon while I continue my anatomy studies.

The latest drawing that took me about a week to do and it wasn't related to the difficulty,I was just getting bored pretty fast and stopped working on it.

Thanks a lot joe, they do start to become tiring,at least when you only do these sort of portraits and illustrations.I'll do a couple more and then get back to studying.

Been awhile since I looked through you sketchbook and I just have to say that your rendering skills have gotten amazing. I'm really loving how dedicated you are to each of your pieces. However, I think you should try to not rely so much on photo references to do your studies. I saw your earlier post that said you would start drawing from life soon, but why wait? I think it's more beneficial to draw from life rather than a photograph. Nothing wrong with doing some photo studies, but you get more out of life drawing.

Anyway, I'm totally envious of how much you've improved already. Keep up the good work =]

Wow,new comments on my sketchbook!Awesome sauce!

@Bowie: I'm going to start doing life drawing in the park on saturday,I'm currently working on a portrait for a friend.Trust me,I've had enough of photo reference! Thanks for the kind words,my rendering has improved vastly over the last month.

@Eclip-se:Thanks,patience is a virtue after all and I'm glad I have plenty of it.

@Black Sun S: I haven't studied anatomy lately since I've been doing all these pieces but if you want to make anatomy easier then start working out.It doesn't matter if you're training at the gym or doing calisthenics, you'll begin to understand how every exercise works each muscle and after a while when they're bigger, you can use yourself as reference in front of the mirror to study them.

This is a comission I did for a friend.I'm really happy that he liked it because I put a lot of work into it.As usual, the digital camera sucks but since I can't afford a scanner at the moment,it will have to do.

I started drawing from life yesterday in the park and I hope that I can keep it up every day for the following months.

I liked how you could see the reflection of the church in the water and I wanted to catch that on paper:

I need to start working faster and stop with all the details because it's taking me too much.

Great renderings man, the only thing I could say is try to push your values more, everything's staying pretty light, try and add more darks into the people and it'll really make the forms pop.

Thanks!I know about the values and I'm working on it but most of the times the scanner and digital camera make the portraits look pretty light in tone. The couple for example looks better in reality but because of the scanner's light it makes the values softer.
I'll try to make them darker from now on and see how they turn out.

A portrait I did for some friends.

I didn't spend enough time on the background as I would have liked but I was pressed by time,so under the circumstances,it turned out okay.

This was an experiment I made because I was curious to see how the ink would look.

When I started inking with the dip pen I took too much ink on it and a pretty big blob dripped on a part of the right eye.
Luckily,I kept calm and managed to correct as much as possible so that I could continue doing it until the end.
I can't say I'm really satisfied with everything about it but it was my first time using ink and I'm still learning how to use ink,so I can't be too harsh on myself.I will do better next time though.

Started doing self portraits again and I'm having problems with the eyes.I'll do at least one each day until I get the hang of it.

My first ink wash after I sketched myself in front of a window looking like a boxer that K.O'd his opponent.
    Sketch:

    Final:

It's not perfect by any means but I learned that ink is a powerful tool and I'll try to use it as much as I can in the following months.

Your last post looks very good.
I think its better for you to do more gestural work, life studies, and avoid the camera.

Well, the first self portrait was done in front of a mirror and the boxer style one was done in front of my furniture's window at night to catch some good shading,so I think they apply as life drawings but thanks none the less, guys.
I'll do more but I have some commissions I need to finish and I have to see how I can do the work and study at the same time.

    hey
you definitely know how to draw what you are looking at! that great.
I wonder if some of those are you copying from photos, like this because it is showing of a-bit too flashy
too much white and it flattens the photo, so it's too bad
maybe try practicing more on drawing from life so you can play with the lightning
    in the photos

great job - keep it up

The problem is with the shading as it's not too dark and some of the people look like they have an aura around them.Like I said,I'm working on it but I'll have to get some good paper stumps for it as the ones I made myself are decent but not quite what I'm looking for.
    Thanks for the critique!

It's been a month since I last updated this sketchbook since conceptart.org went through upgrades and I've been pretty busy myself but here's my latest stuff:

    The man with no name

    Batman Begins

    Robert De Niro in Casino

    A Bruce Timm Silver Surfer

    A gangster scene I made

A Batman drawing where I used myself as reference

Some Jordi Bernet sketches done with a dip pen and ink

The Punisher where I used myself as reference again

Two commissions that were birthday presents

A Frankenstein commission I did for a friend. The quality of the photo is pretty lousy and I didn't have time to scan it anywhere.

One of my better self portraits
