abandoned the idea with the "lonely war machine" and added a army.

Dang you guys! I wouldn't want to meet ANY of these creatures, much less on a battlefield. I'll come back and do individual crits later when I update with a better sketch.

The concept for this is an aquatic assault beast. I figure, sea battles would be fought on all sides, top, bottom, front and back. So the beast is armored all around with no flimsy appendages. It's a mouth brooding species. They way troops utilize it in battle is they each carry a device that emits pheromones unique to that individual beast's offspring. Believing that the soldiers are its young, the beast follows them wherever they're transported and protects them inside its mouth. If it feels they are threatened, it will defend them by charging the enemy (if appropriate) or discharging some bio-weapon. I haven't decided if electricity or concussive sonar is more feasible.

The design is pretty flat right now. I need to really rework it, and incorporate the bio weapon.

I think this concept appeals to me most so far, so I'm going for it. Beetles that spray a black inklike substance to blind the enemy.

30 minute warmup...not sure if it will be the final direction, just getting a feel for the mood and finding form. Nine Inch Nails is assisting in the process.

Sorry these took so long. For some reason my browser wasn't displaying everyone's picture attachments in reply mode.

Udonhead: I like the design and toxic eggs. My brain reads it as “small” but that's mainly because it's an insectoid design, so it would be nice to have something in the final image to show scale.

Rob Powell: The head on the last silhouette looks intruiging to me.

Edward B: Really cool design. I love how you've sketched it too, can't wait to see it rendered.

Artezianin: Holy freaking nightmares! I'm going to dream about that thing eating my face now. T.T

PhilipO: haha, in your first sketch I really want to give that guy a hug. He just seems kinda lost and lovable. Like he's yelling, “Hey guys? Guys? Where is everybody?”

Flame Unquenchable: Your creature's developing nicely. I like how you moved away from all the armor plating and stuff toward chemical cover and attacks.

Robolee: I like the third one as well. It's pretty gnarly.

Kerah: Something funky is going on with your creature's sternum, its super flexibility would read a lot more believably if its underside lines up with the top.

Josu: Looks like its off to a nice start.

    Scorge: Holy wow!

Here's a more refined sketch. There's still some tweaking in its future. The head isn't quite solid yet. The tail is less for propulsion and more for zapping or pinching stuff now. I haven't quite settled on that either.

    So much competition and inspiration
Flame Unquenchable I love the design just refine it a little more
Josu I love the idea you have so far can wait to see the final
Varguy the back legs look a little off and the head a little lopsided flip the canvas and check for some more errors
Buhardilla looks more cute then intimidating but looks can be deciving so I can wait for the final piece
Edward B Diggin the mantis idea I recommand adding some dramatic light to make to creature more intimidating

time to step my game up lol

Here's mine so far, decided to just run with my initial idea and just see where I could take it. Basically trying to get the silhouette of a quadrupedal tank whilst taking inluence from coconut crabs and bombardier beetles.

wow so many great ideas... got a little sketch going. But ended up starting on new pose/design to make it more engaging. Idea behind it is a heavily armored creature that takes the front like to allow the smaller weaker humans/aliens follow behind

Quick pencil sketch for now! The dude is naked and headless because I ran out of room on the paper and I haven't decided what sort of uniform he'll be wearing.
    It's like a bison/rhinoceros/torosaurus hybrid thing?

well my computer crashed and I lost 2 hours working on one so here are the other two wips and it turns out I suck at rendering and perspective lol
need to update my visual libary

update I decided to change the front of the mouth into a strong shovel-like chin and legs to cut the ground to move at fast speed to ram through the enemy base it can also tunnel underground and as soon it penetrates the enemy base it will attack from the inside or explode in a instant

    Awesome jobs so far guys!
And yes scorge, NIN always helps. With everything.

    Here´s my attempt -
Will probably stick to a heavy Berserker-typ, a bit Gorilla-like. For defense, its got thick skin and bone-plates on the side of its arms to protect allies, and a long strap hanging down from its neck to protect that weak spot. Aside from its arms, its tail has spikes on top while the downside can be used as a hammer to smash enemies.
Its mouth only seems to be a mouth, the 'head' actually claps over to reveal a gaping hole with teeth, as well as its eyes, which are also being protected in there. Since it can only orientate by hearing, it will go into berserk-mode pretty easily - but it will open its mouth just a bit so that the eyes can see when its needed.

Will probably depict a scene where it breaks free from its chains to rush into battle.

The head will become smaller, the arms longer and the torso more massive.
    Thoughts?

Scorge - Looking good man, fireflinging badass on the way. Will there be something to indicate scale? I'm thinking you're cooking something with those dots on the ground beneath the assault beast.

Some more sketchphase, and yes, eyes.
