Love that bag study from life. The value studies of head statues on the last page look great too, but you seem to be exaggerating the size of the eyes so watch out for that. If you're looking for stuff to study to practice values, perhaps planar head models could be a good exercise. Keep up the good work! ^^

You did a good job at separating the values. So that's pretty nice.

I think you can use some guide lines to indicate the big basic form first. And maybe use some atmospheric perspective for more 3D feel.

So this was sort of a challenge kind of thing to paint a car in ms paint.
It was really hard with doing something without low-opacity brushes and like four sizes in brush. And very limited choices in brushes. I'm not really pleased with it but oh well.. It was fun to try out paint.. Photo ref used.

Creusa: Thank you for stopping by, you wonderfully crazy girl! (yeah been stalking your sb but can't remember if I've ever commented? better fix that if I haven't now though) You are right, I miss those too. I feel like my eyes can't see the contrasts properly yet. Better keep training.

Here's couple of quick studies from GoT. Kind of to study the thing mentioned above. Without using pen pressure stuff.

The last ones seem impressive to me, I should try put some limitation to my brush using {I wonder what my English is at 4:45am, I struggle with it these days anyway) myself, I did that long ago...
I simply have nothing to say about the portraits, just keep doing them. I agree with Creusa about contrast.

More of the same series. I kind of like doing these studies. It's fun to concentrate on colors and kind of trying to simplify them.

The second one in post #313. Blows me away. It's quite rough yet I instantly recognized the the characters (Daenerys and Jorah) and the scenery (Just outside House of the undying). Way to go!

Second update today, sorry I feel like spamming and it's terribly messy and all but I love being back here and just wanted to post this right awaay!

No wonder people like these, color makes scenes somewhat realistic and recognizable even without details. This revelation hit me when I saw some square like shapes in someone's SB. There was no details I think but due to the colors it was obvious it's a sunlit path between trees. Colors are very powerful
I should try this myself I know colors should be one of my top priorities, I could use that knowledge in my work as well (I had to design a few web games and banners in my life and half of it was deciding on colors).

Don't apologize, it's YOUR SB, you may do whatever artistic you want. I'm just fooling around, dumping blurb every time in my own and still no one says a bad word

B&w? If you can do colors well, you surely can do grayscale well as well, I would think... But why skipping colors? Do you feel you will be better only focusing on the values (and the simplified forms)?
I feel again, it might be good for me. Maybe it could help with my detailed enviro problem. I'm used to focus on a single human or animal and details confuse me if I have to draw them quickly.

No I didn't mean that I wan't to skip colors, I love colors. But I feel that my values are still even weaker than my colors. That is why I'm always trying to make up some fun ways to practise values.

I wondered why that bag looked so familiar! That last photo study looks great, and I also like the first image in your last post. That thick, opaque paint looks awesome, really juicy! I'm sorry, I don't really have anything helpful to say, just that I think your studies are looking awesome! Keep up the good work!

About the last one:
Hmmm.... Not so bad I guess but there's so much room for improvement. I wish to write a bit at least (I don't draw these days, my house is hot and my brain is melted away along with my mood and I badly need these to do something) but... you know... I studied skin coloring but I'm no good in that. I just say what I think, take it with a grain of salt, okay?
The fact I'm used to warmer situations (you know, many photographers think warm pink/orange suit sexy gals...) doesn't help either.

Let's see. I find your darkest colors a bit too cold. Desaturated, okay, but desaturated and cold seem muddy or something.
The lighting is off, it isn't consistent at all.
I'd use a bit brighter (if not more saturated, then lighter) colors, especially on the torso. Some highlights would make it nicer. And I miss some orange/yellow hints here and there (probably due to the warm brown in her stomach) to make things... IDK, just better. I'm usually no good with words
I don't know why did you used bluish shadows for her boobs, it's way different on her thighs... Maybe it's some artistic thing I know nothing about (I mean it; one day I should draw a figure or a portrait with different colors. I'm too afraid of wander off from the colors I actually see somewhere. It's no good).

I actually know a few things about such topic but it's very chaotic in my mind. Unorganized. Draw some more and maybe I will find to say something I'm confident in

shiNIN: Thanks for the crits! I'm pretty confused about the cold/warm colors still so you'll be seeing lot of suckiness and experimenting before I will start to understand them. But I will. There was actually hint of blue in the shadows as well (well thats what I saw at least..) coming from the sky and reflected from the rocks (I guess?) and I actually think there should be more on her tights as well. Well not propably that much though but oh well. I've been also starting to read Gurney's Color and light so hoping it will help me to understand these things better.

Soo first of all there were no updates this weekend because I was off to Ruisrock listening to Nightwish!! (wuhuu!) They were awesome. But anyways here's Schjerfbeck study. Love her paintings. Never done these master studies before so wanted to try it out. It's a lot more simplified than the original obviously but just wanted to feel the colors in it.

Another quick master study from Albert Edelfelt's painting. Trying to figure out the right colors but without success, lol. Added the ref here also.

Also did some horrible experimentings with some poor people's faces.
Was thinking of starting longer and more detailed master study next.

Yep, mastering skin coloring takes a lot of time, I tried to understand something of it a few times and it always swept away me with its complicatedness...
The Schjerfbeck study looks good but the bright white spots are fighting for attention. I looked at the original painting, I see it's a subtle thing, you make it just a tad simpler, the white spots bigger and such things happen... White is tricky.

I don't find the faces so bad, especially the second one It seems you have some difficulties at choosing lip colors. I can relate very much. But you will learn it eventually. I hope me too.
