    Oceanic Sketchbook

About 4.5 months ago I acquired my first tablet. I quickly realized that I had very little grasp of the digital medium and all of its capabilities. So, in the time since, I've taken the opportunity to explore a little bit.

The following is a set of unfocused, visual-ramblings, in which I've attempted various... things, mostly just having fun mark-making.

EDIT: Check the end of the thread for more recent work.

The following are select sketches (there are way too many to post at once) done over the past 4.5 months, roughly in order.

    Everything is done from imagination.

    .
EDIT:also removed some oversized images from this post

    Interesting exploration.
I love the way you studies tablet keeping it loose but i think it's time to focus!
Focus on less fancy brushes and on lines, clean and sharp for start.
Nice abstract approach by the way.
    Cheers!

    Few more from the bunch...

Everything in here so far is fast and loose, gonna try to render some of them out soon.

Going to start using this sketchbook for studies, sketches, development towards actual concepts as opposed to the fast and loose stuff I've been posting so far.

Cool stuff, very doom and gloom. I like this sort of thing a lot.
However, although it translates well creatively, your use of style might also be holding you back, because you are avoiding drawing difficult but important things. In my opinion you should be focusing more on the drawing and tackling things that are challenging to you rather than painterly effects and alien distortions.

    .

Appreciate the comments. I'm going to break up my working process into distinct sections.

    -Sketching/idea building

-Refinement/design/value block-in/basically making sure things are solid but not exactly pretty (AKA the hardest, most draining part)

    -Rendering/details/polish

I understand at this point that tight rendering and details are probably the least important thing for me to work on. I want my constant focus to be on addressing my weaknesses until they become strong points, and to never reach a state of total satisfaction. It's literally impossible to have too much knowledge in this field

    So here's:

-A life painting in photoshop (30/40 minutes) of a little water polo ball
-Something I'm working on for EOW
    -Random sketch
    -Yesterday's Daily Sketch Group sketch
    -Another random sketch

I'm infinitely more comfortable drawing from life than from imagination, which means I have work to do

Fixed the composition up a little on the environment, plus a couple really quick doodles

Probably mentioned this before, but everything in this thread is from imagination unless otherwise stated.

hey, I applaud your efforts on picking your weaknesses and focusing on those. I think working on fundamentals first or at least dedicating a large chunk of time to them is a good idea. In terms of your figures, I actually preferred your looser sketches that you first posted up the top. They are anatomically more proportionate, are more interesting and dynamic in pose and the volume of the forms are more successful, despite their looseness. It's really easy to tighten up when rendering and I think somewhere along the line in your last few posts you have been missing some of these elements. Bring them back in! Perhaps take that older approach and then detail up from there. Keep it up!

What I'm working on for CHOW and some thumbs from last week's EOW.

    The Soaking Jester

The lonely court jester. Badly wounded in a tragic court break-dancing incident, he was fitted with mechanized cyborg limbs. Unable to cope with his new exterior,
he turned to the drink, eventually going on a final binge Leaving Las Vegas style. He stands now in a grey, limbo realm. Badly jaundiced, deeply contemplative, stiff and lifeless
as if molded out of wax. Only but a trace of his former jovial persona in still visible.

Hmm interesting stuff man, it's good to see you rendering things out more. Maybe do some more studies I'm sure they'd really pay off. Either way keep going.
