Improve or perish! Dennis Sketchbook

Hey,
your tonal studies are really improving. I think at this stage you should move onto a more analytical approach to these studies.

Rather than trying to make a photo-real copy, break the subject down.
For example, painting/drawing the subject with only geometric planes.
Or taking a more graphical approach and translate the value differences into flat shapes, i.e. treat the shadows as a solid shapes. Think cell shading and Mike Mignola type artwork.

Also, where's my free kitten?

Been a while. Was away for vacation for over a week and couldn't do any digital art (sketched a ton of stuff in my sketchbook though, but alas, no scanner.). Here's some stuff from the last couple of days though. Vent back to the basics in order to improve stuff like anatomy and similar in my drawins, so a whole ton of loomis and hogarth studies.

Really am digging your anatomy work, especially the head/face studies. Only thing I could recommend is to pay a little more attention to the proportions of the thigh and shins in relation to each other. Other than that, you seem to be doing great!

Thanks for the kind words and encouragement. I'll dust off my tablet tonight. By the way, killer sketchbook. Seems like you've been hard at work with the anatomy and figure studies. But those portraits are looking phenomenal!

Lovely work in here. You seem to have great attention to detail and I really love the attention you give to surfaces (like textures, tiny scars etc etc); it really brings the characters to life. I think my favorite is the helmet study though haha, it came out amazing. I'd say just focus on getting your anatomy properly proportioned, and line economy. Especially with the gestures, your lines are very angular and scratchy; work on getting the flow of the figure in a few simple strokes. You'll get it with practice, I know its hard at first hahaa. Looking forward to more!

@ Sapphirelullaby: Thanks a lot for the kind words. I am focusing a lot on my anatomy atm, trying to get it all down. I have been trying to get my lines smoother, especially on the 30 second studies and similar, but your probably right, I just need to keep practicing.
