You're right about the digital paintings! I've been trying to put digital painting on the back burner: I want to get better at oil painting first and only do more digital once my foundations are more solid, which is gonna take a while.. It's more of a guilty pleasure (I'm considering switching to painter and learning to use that).
I've noticed that improvements in oil painting convert exponentially into improvements in digital painting.
Since I'm not very happy with my handling of color, here's a color chart, with varying hue-value-chroma in the shade of yellow ochre, to show how I spent my morning, going to do these again in the next days. Sorry for the crappy cell phone photo..doesn't really show the color differences but maybe someone can get an idea for a study practice...

about the grisaille, an art teacher once told me not to use pencils for placeholders but start with big fields of color right away, because that gets you closer to where your going; the pencil lines kind of distract. not sure if it applies to you

Ashess! Thanks for the advice I tried skipping the drawing part (it's what i do on thumbnails/smaller sketches) but for bigger sizes I like having some lines for some sort of direction, helps me mess up less..

K!: yeah, I can imagine the nostalgy...especially now that the weather is good; the life studies are mostly from school, I like it a lot, really...I feel like the teachers taught me a lot about life (not just painting/drawing); I'm really grateful I found them.

Crappy cell phone picture of a crappy painting makes it look much worse than it actually is, well whatever, it was a very useful/fun exercise and show me a lot about what I have to work on. Oil is still very hard to control for me...but I don't surrender and the fight goes on grrr!!!

Hey man, nice studies! You have a good handle on lighting and values.

The most recent one, where is his left hand supposed to be? I thought at first it was resting on his leg (as would make sense for this pose) but the perspective isn't lining up. It looks like he's holding his stomach. Actually the right hand too, looks more like it's hovering a little above his leg, but I don't know if it's intentional or not.

last two weeks i kinda worked on this, really an half assed attempt full of obvious mistakes, I know, bleah! i think my brain is ready for a break





+ some rough lines from imagination, could figure the anatomy out and clean it up, I guess

How do you do with the color chart at the top of the page, btw? Is it just an exercise in seeing color, or do you actually use the chart for something?

Mistakes are more in than the skeletons... The color charts work both ways, it helps in mixing color and can be used as a reference when painting (tho I've never done that), it's an exercise suggested by Richard Schmid.

everything on this page is wonderful, the shading on the male figure, so good.

only thing with the painting of this guy the drapery at the lap and waist is noticeably off. its too stiff, it should wrinkled at his waist.
the face is very nice, but everything else may need a review.

anyways, good stuff man keep it up
