For anatomy I had a lecture with Marshall Vandruff and recommended these 2 books: "The Human Figure" from David Rubins and "Drawing from life" from George Bridgman.
They help me a lot with basic shapes and anatomy!

You're at the beginning of a long road and I think this advice from Bishop2004 is definitely worth paying attention to. It's nice to see you working on anatomy - keep going with that because it'll help a lot with your characters.

I also think you shouldnt be so worried about critiquing others yet, not until you have a bit more knowledge and experience under your belt. Sometimes generalised comments can be more destructive than useful, especially if the person lacks confidence or experience themselves. Not that I'm saying you shouldnt comment at all, just maybe think a little more about the context you're commenting in. I've seen you mention people's linework a couple of times when that's a personal working style rather than lack of control. Art isn't always about perfect clean linework so maybe thats something to keep in mind for future critiques.

I hope I'm not being too harsh and that you wont stop working and improving because you're on the right track. Keep going and good luck!

Noooo you're not being too harsh at all! I love crits like this! You're right about the line work. I suppose a lot of times I like to comment in other people's sketchbook is because I want to help but I can't always!! Since usually they're of a higher level than I am! Yesss, I think his crit was top notch, and I'm learning from his advice as much as possible! I'll be doing a warm up, then I'm doing some Andrew Loomis Head studies!

When first beginning, the best advice I can give you is to learn the basics of perspective drawing and also ... draw from life! Though it seems counter intuitive sometimes, knowing how to make a nice still life is intimately connected to knowing how to produce a good portrait. Similarly, if you plan on doing anything "from imagination", then perspective drawing is super super important. It'll give you that framework from which to work from.

All in all, if you want to improve at a fast rate... sketch often and draw what you see around you. Get your friends and family to pose for you or just draw them when they aren't looking. Sketch stuff from around your room. Don't try to spend hours and hours on any individual piece. Draw something for a bit and then move onto the next piece. Not getting too attached to your work is a great lesson to learn. If you continue to draw, you'll produce literally thousands of drawings.

A last little bit of advice when it comes to "life drawing"... worry more about what's going on in front of your paper (ie your subject matter). When you begin to understand what you're drawing, your ability to translate that knowledge to 2D will improve. Don't be afraid to produce an "ugly" drawing. It's all part of the learning process!

Hi guys! Sorry I went on a mini-hiatus again! Mostly because I haven't been doing like a ton of studies for a bit because I was going through harder times, when I usually do bigger pieces that help me emotionally rather than try to become better art wise! Hey!

I can really see your efforts into those characters. They have great expression but one thing to keep in mind is form. They look flat. Another tip is to think about line quality. When you're drawing, try to make less lines instead of scratching them into the canvas. With time, patience and practice you will get there. Just focus on absorb the fundamentals. Perspective, Proportions, Placement, Planes and Patterns. just to cite a few. Have you tried Loomis yet? If not, you totally should look at it: http://alexhays.com/loomis/

Thank you so much for the feedback! Yes, I actually have Loomis' head and hands downloaded, and the faces/heads I had up there were from practicing the different shapes, front-on! But I'll practice more from the book. Thanks for stopping by and hope you stop in again soon!
