    Spitboi's Attempt at Getting Good

Hey all! I made a sketchbook last fall but haven't updated it in ages so I am making this new one instead. I hope to be more dedicated to this one than last one I had.

Back in high school I did a bunch of anime/manga crap and never had lessons till the traditional drawing/painting classes during junior year. I didn't do much towards the end of high school through my first two years of high school. Since the start of last semester I have been on a rampage studying anatomy and stuff so I have improved a decent amount and am just being extremely optimistic!

Because I am 21 now I am going my fastest/hardest to catch up on missed time. I hope that you all enjoy what I put up and if not, give a critique

Aiming to be a great artist one day on the same level of pro vets in the industry.

    Thanks!

    - Spit

Did some quick painting - learned to blend the other day which was awesome....but thing is its still hard for me to pick the best colors to go with. Any advice? Going to focus a ton more on digital in order to actually get the fundamentals in it down first while still focusing on anatomy and the such with skills in traditional and implement them back.

Its late so sorry for confusion! Thanks for checking in!

I like the looseness of you pen work, the first piece has great line quality! would like that loose line work in some tablet drawings!

figures are looking pretty good dude. just keep on working through bridgeman and loomis. i would focus on doing sketchpages that are like one full page bridgeman studies, one full page loomis studies, then one full page imagination sketches. and switch off like that for a while.

also try to work on some photostudies in digital. those will help you a lot when it comes to observing, and seeing lighting and colors better. anyways, your improving pretty drastically man, even if you dont see it as clearly as others, its still pretty evident.

    keep at it man!!

@Nickybeats - Thanks dude! I am glad that this new sketchbook is going to be on my homepage so I can force feed myself to upload something once a day at least...

Yeah I am going to try and bust out a page of Bridgeman today and scan it in later either today or tomorrow. Not sure if I will attempt Loomis anytime soon. The digital studying I will definitely be trying to do more of but feel that using color picker and stuff is cheating - though it definitely has been helping a bunch. Should I stick to grayscale stuff before jumping into color to get some good contrast studies going?

@Iamkennstan - Thanks bro! I almost missed your comment! Yeah I spent about 2 hours on that picture and 50 minutes were about only coming up refining the pose....I have to be able to do this in Photoshop though. I work almost only in ink except when actually attempting to do something grand so my lineweight is decent but I need to be as good in digital.....
    --------------------------------------------------------------------

I did this a few weeks ago but am tempted on working on it again - fix the composition and buff it up with the know-how I have with Photoshop now

    Thanks for the read!

@iamkennstan - I will do that when I get to update my sketchbook with more art I have done that is good

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------

I am excited after doing these - I did the first one last night after struggling with a picture of my mom I found in black and white from back in 1970's and decided since I am going to be doing some practice with values/shades/contrast/everything having it be a study. That first one is crap but the second one is better after only about an hour spent on it. I am so happy to see that much improvement in just a day of 4 hours of tablet practice!

Anyways this is just getting me more pumped! Even though its embarrassing, I will do this again tomorrow and finish it up well. Hope to get as good with digital ASAP.

So today I was goofing off...spent only about 2 hours at most drawing...decided to do some Bridgeman studies and actually was amazed at how just two pages of studying could be so helpful! I spent time on more than just these two but I couldn't get to the scanner at school till about now...have to drive home for the weekend.

Hopefully I can work a bit on some creative work with poses tonight and also finish up that "study" I am working on for my mom (would it be if I am making it a study?).

    Cheers!

NickyBeats - thanks bro! Yeah I am gonna get back to that in the far future...probably summer? Works sucks here as you know
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SO I haven't been updating this much - kind of a failure at this. I have uploaded on my Facebook which isn't much help and started on the Crimson Daggers as no one is commenting. Its hard to stay on top of things on a popular site that regularly updates/active but thats the point then?

Anywho here are some rather quick things I did for fun within the last few weeks.

Here be some more digital crap

Feels good knowing the speed at which my art is improving! Found some tangents though in the sketch so I will mess around with it when I have more time

hey dude! keep up the good work, especially the Bridgman. that's what helped me the most out of EVERYTHING i've learned (well, that and Loomis's "Creative Illustration" and "Eye of the Painter"). anyway, dude, you're in Boston, we should hang out sometime. we have a group here that meets regularly to draw and talk about art and stuff, you're welcome to come if you want. let me know if you're interested.

    take care!

T@purb36 - Thanks man! Yeah I am going to post some more art after I scan it but anatomy is helping out tons! I haven't noticed people commenting so I have migrated but now I am pumped . I will totally PM you about the art get together sometime

@joe777k7 - Man this makes me feel good! Finally people are commenting . I am going to hopefully get more studies in this summer as school is continually compiling work on my back...but only a week left of madness! Love your stuff and will comment in a bit!
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I haven't scanned my sketchbook and took a good week break from the crash drawing/painting I was doing. Taking a break and going outside and talking with others always always helps clear the mind!

Got class in 5 minutes so I have to bounce but I will upload a picture that is in black and white of my ladyfriend..shes going to be back in a week and I needed to do some value studies. Hope you guys can tell me what is good/not...

ON A SIDE NOTE: Lately me and my team won a competition at Microsofts NERD Center which was a bit surreal...haven't told many people but those who know me irl have complemented my team and I...hope you can all check our game when its finally released in August!

    congrats on the competition!

good stuff on the pic of your gf, btw. one tip, the less lines a woman has in her face, the younger and prettier she will look. the light lines that are around her hairline and between her nose and her cheek, it might look better if you got rid of them. my 2 yen...

    g'luck man!

@purb36 - Thanks man! Yeah I know what you mean about the lines but I did those just in case I want to go over it in color sometime...just to remind me how the light hits the planes....still I am going to play around a bit

@Joe777k7 - I know! I need to update this more ...I haven't been able to due to busy schedules but I am really stoked on posting some more stuff that I have been doing. So much but no real reason to post it now as I am better. Thanks a bunch though !

@iamkennstan - Ugh you called out my mortal enemy, finished pieces! I know I have to do them but I usually plow through different stages which are about 4 hours at a time but I haven't had time to do that...however doing art 400 hours and getting paid a stippend will most definitely keep my skills improving by end of summer!
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I haven't really had time to upload stuff to my computer but really should do a huge dump sometime....here is an unfinished WIP for a Dagger challenge and some character sketches.

Congratulations on winning the Microsoft competition! Your sketchbook looks good, the way you paint is sweet. keep it up with the loose lines. I agree with the comment about putting less lines in faces in order to make them look younger. It's difficult getting very fine lines in with pen/paint without making them look like wrinkles, so it's usually best to just leave them out. I'll be stopping back by to see more

Hey I'm new here, lol. just want to say that I like the perspective study of the empty room, you should put people in it... and windows... but not any windows... circle windows! because circle windows kickass! and... because drawing circles in perspective is not only fun... it's also good practice! c ya! :p

@Joe777k7 - Thanks for the post again Joe! Hope to see more of your stuff on your sb - still a page ahead and I got to catch up!

Got some things I've been doing but right now I want to post this sketch I did and sent to my boi NickyBeats! Kinda want to post more but will post this for the moment of an idea I had and pumped out in 30'....I need to do more work doing finished rendered paintings. This is a huge issue as I would learn so much from just finishing something and I seem to not have time I put towards it...such a conflict.
