Update. Still ways to go, like making the keys not look identical.

sketches and mucking about on photoshop - the birds are the keys, the keys he is wearing are more of a symbol of his post as keymaster

there are some cool designs taking shape here!
take two = less crustacean
aaaaaand take 3 will probably involve very impractical clothing.
Going for something a bit different. Was tempted to go vampy, and some ended up with...a bunny. Because no one messes with the bunny.

Couple of ideas
I doubt I will get everything done in time, but I read the concept and thought it was a great idea. Trying to get back into drawing on a regular basis, so this is what I have so far.
looking great guys. heres an update
Hello! First CHOW! eep.
Just quick lines and color ideas right now. I figured that if this is a kid who was chosen at birth and is capable of looking into people, they are going to develop differently.

Decided to go with someone who looked like they could defend themselves, and the keys..the chain is just long enough to allow necessary movement but is symbolic of his duty.
coming out of hiding to see if I can finish this brief by week's end, rarely do, but here's to trying! there's prolly going to be a lot of tweaking, but I like the presence I've given to my keymaster.
keep arting this week peeps!
I couldn't stop working, even missing the daily show for this, lol. I am trying to learn more about how shading/volume work, so I am posting the greyscale and color I have thrown on. If anyone has tips/crits on my shading please feel free.
Updated.
Wow, it seems like everyone is pulling out all the stops on this one.
My only current issue is the background, I've never been very good at them, so we'll see how this turns out. I'm also debating on some kind of weapon. I mean, it is a bunny. A creepy bunny, but still.

Hey guys, first time around here ^^. Well, I'm starting off with some sketches, hope you guys enjoy =D

Made a quick start on my keymaster. Was thinking the keys are tattooed on him and he can draw them out at will. The gold chain will be a collar around his neck that attaches to the back of his head as well. Tailored to each individual keymaster they're attached when they come of age and are only removed and reforged upon death.
I may still change it up a bit more as he's not too far along, but so far I'm just keeping it simple.
Crits/comments welcome as always.

Done for the moment. Still working the background, but I'm pretty happy with the bunny. May work on the feet/add pattern to the pants.

This is actually my first real posting here on Conceptart.org. This is a WIP of my version of the key master. The idea is that the keys will be chained to the stone that he wears around his neck. 'his burden to bare' kinda thing. Hopefully I'll have this finished before the deadline.
Thanks to whom ever had the idea for this weekly excercise forum. The hardest thing i find is coming up for ideas for my own work, so having a 'brief' to follow for my own art practice is great fun!
Einen: Lovely styleI hope you're gonna put him in a background whilst you still have time. Reminds me of the necromancers of Qarth
Risaki-chan: I think the only problem I have with your design so far is the keyhole in her chest. This isn't really a problem in itself I'm just unsure if having that hole as a keyhole. It makes me think that they keys are to her heart and not the 7 doors themselves.
Cumquat: That guy is actually adorable, I can imagine him being in a children's fairy tale very easilyHard to believe you got that done in one sitting. Are you going to add a background too?
Sleepykit: No problem, I'm glad we got a good idea going for youI think if a bird or two was interacting with the Keymaster it might add a bit more story to it as right now they seem like separate elements.
ChaosTheory: I'll comment more when I can see what's happening more easily, I'd definitely suggest making his collar larger though, add some regal elements to him as right now he seems more pauper than highest position known
OakKs: Beautiful value right now, really looking forward to seeing how this comes out, his arms seem a bit small for his frame right now though I think.
alo: Reminds me of my last CHoW entry, A squid lady with several armsI think the extra legs seem to distract from the design though, they look like they've been stuck on for the sake of extra legs not so much a function, also her dragging the keys long the floor seems to take out the context of highest authority and most important items.
Bjulvar: Welcome to the fray! Nice design going on so far, might need to shift his left (our right) foot, however though, he seems off balance. and I'm assuming he's supposed to be slouched as right now it looks like he's missing a neck
Jsn: definitely got the concept of scale going on there, I'd recommend concentrating on the background though at the minute. Right now it's as if there is only one door, perhaps a grand hall might be more fitting?
lancer_idenoure: Nice looking foreign design, I'd suggest adding more interesting elements to his costume though, his silhouette is very basic right now and I'm unsure where the 7 keys are.
Ironbyte: I definitely prefer the first design to the second, interesting silhouette and she seems to hold a higher position of powerI'd suggest adding more to the hair, make it slightly ecceentric, things hanging out of it and stuff
Ok enough critiques for now.
Just an update, I've tried meshing the scene nicely, having some interaction and defining certain attributes to each of the children representing the elements. Think I'll concentrate on the Keymaster for now though, as that's what the point of the topic is after all
EDIT: Just re-read the brief and realised the whole keys on chain thing, I think I'll go back and redesign the whole thing. No children this time, just the character. Hopefully I'll finish it in time![]()

JonSiva: Welcome to CA! Your style and rendering looks very nice. However, don't forget about the rule that at least 3/4 of the character must be visible. I don't know if it's enough that you show it on a separate character sheet, but it would be a pity for you to be disqualified so I encourage you to show some more of him.
Tchuk: Funny thing: I was thinking of Qarth all along, but more of the richest man than the necromancers. That similarity is actually a coincidence. I will most likely not put any more background than a bit of dirt under his feet since I much prefer putting focus on the character itself than on the setting.
tchuk was thinking the same, will be working on it this afternoon
here are some more design sheets

Ok, corrected my mistake of not having the keys attached by a golden chain, decided to make a new concept based off ravens, phoenixes and Hindu Holy men. Looking a bit better now
