Inspire me. - Old Masters

I have been looking for inspiration and one suggestion was looking at the old masters.

Please can you suggest a few of the key figures I should be looking at. I am aware of them unfortunately and I'm quite embarrassed to admit my knowledge on art history is very limited.

That's... pretty lazy. Don't you have libraries that would have art history books where you live? Or, in a pinch, Google and Wikipedia?

The libraries where I live are small and very limited, they have very obscure books, I really don't understand whoever reads the majority of them, the art section is practically non existent.

Sorry I didn't mean to appear as lazy, I'm a little misguided often going on a wild goose chase of information D=

I will have a look though, I really wish to improve my knowledge of art history ^^;

And they can't order books from other libraries? Just asking, I don't know where you live but in here, if one library under the same jurisdiction has a book, for a fee they can send it to other libraries for you to pick up. Might be worth asking at least.

The library doesn't have many connections when ordering books, as it is only libraries in the area which they are all small, and it consists of mainly children's books. I have ordered books in the past but again even so it's a small selection they can get a hold of.

and yes the library at uni is quite impressive, but I live away from uni and now the term is over I'm back at home and don't have access to them as easily as I did When I return to uni I will definitely have a look

aw guys, don't be harsh...maybe she just need some names to start with.

my personal favourites are Lawrence Alma-Tadema, Herbert Draper, Rudolph Ernst, Ludwig Deutsch, Frederic Soulacroix..

they all have this...similar style and theme going on, but hey that's what I like.

Thank you This is what I was hoping for ^^ I feel like I have asked the wrong question @___@ I know about google... but as this is a site of professionals I just wanted to be directed towards useful sites and specific artists that inspire people. Google is great but if you don't know what your looking for specifically it isn't much help ^^ So thank you kayness

The problem is that "masters" covers so many conceivable ideas that it hurts my head. If each of us put a few up we would not make a dent. I might start with a used version of an art history text like Gardner's Art Through the Ages or something similar.

Maybe if you google art time periods or isms like Northern Renaissance, Italian Renaissance, Mannerism, Realism, Neo-Classicism, Impressionism, etc.
