Another update too:
I'll add more branches in the background, some leaves too. May tighten up details such as the hands and definitely gonna get a little sequence for it blowing up too![]()
Incinerated
It still looks like a purple chicken and these hands make him look kind of sinister and not cute. Round and plump limbs tend to look cuter than thin and sticky ones. Maybe you should consider making him quadrupedal? Look at this cute round chicken(it's a toy though):

Can I ask you how you colored this b/w image? Did you simply put another layer over b/w background and start working with colors? Or you're setting layer to overlay or something?

Cute and cheerful! Liking them!
Man, these are all looking great... this will be my first entry in a COW contest, after years of lurking here on the Website. Sadly, my damned tablet laptop just stopped working, almost immediately after I decided to try my hand at this... so although the beautiful use of color by some of you is intimidating, I am still going to try and go the old analog route with pencil and paper. I am sketching right now, and will post my WIP concepts shortly...
Sure, I took the greyscale image (without strong highlights), made it a Multiply layer and started adding the base colours to the image.
Here's what it looked like at this stage. Then I added light details such as the fur. and tried creating a bit more of a colour balance by adding some blue to the background and a secondary light source to flesh out the creature.
And good luck Prometheus I feel your pain =[ I actually think my mac is about to die myself, so I'm glad I got what I have done already![]()

Argh, I just somehow realized the contest is done tonight D: I also would love to offer advice to others, but I'm fairly new to this. Either way, been haviing one prob after another... first my tablet laptop dies, and now my scanner isn't working either :/ Not even sure I can finish by the deadline, but I'm still working because it's pretty dang fun. So, until I can get to my sister's tomorrow and use her scanner, here are my basic sketches of my creature...
The creature is called a Sodium Sapper. In my first page of sketches at the top left (1), I had the idea of males and females using explosions for both self-defense and reproduction, with the 'androgyne' gender existing solely as the caretakers of the newborns. They would all have bushy, prehensile tails and fairly articulate hands.
Then I did 3 & 4, bigger sketches of a male sapper regular and inflating. #5 was just an attempt at doing an isometric view of an inflating sapper. As I sketched, I stopped liking this design, and wanted something more elegant, and yet still cute. This was also when I decided that simply sucking in air and inflating seemed lame. I wanted a better idea for an explosion, and so I remembered how sodium reacts explosively with water.
I took inspiration from rodents with a sort of bird-like leg structure and fur structures that served a mating purpose, like decorative feathers on birds. This takes us to page two...
I really like the look the first design I did, the one on the left with '6' next to it. Then I decided to try and make him a little more chubby with 7, and in 8 and 9, I just did a quick little redo sketch, and now oddly enough, I actually sort of like that chubby little mother-effer the best out of all the concepts.
With work in less than 5 hours, I'm not sure I can finish a whole piece by the deadline, but still, and advice or comments are appreciated. I'm just trying to get a hand for the whole concept thing, and I hope that these little buggers look cute to you all.
I can explain their behavior and explosive properties in greater depth if you care, but just like my bad habit of trying to do details too soon, so too do I tend to write a lot![]()
Just another sketch I did to fill the space in the bottom right part of page two... now I kind of like this one. Heck, I dunno... either way, this particular sapper is something I might pursue more.
I know it's too late, but I wanted to share anyway. I missed out on this one. ^^;
