F.A.Q. for painter section is coming... have your say....

Hi everyone,

i have started writing up a F.A.Q. thread for painter, to be stickied in this section, i want it to be as clean and short as possible so it will be a closed thread. Obviously i´m not gonna catch all the questions myself so i´m starting this thread for suggesting questions or answers or both. This will also include a list of all known bugs and issues (please no ranting in this thread), i may also put up a wish list in the form of a poll to see what users are looking for in improvements (i¨ll talk to rob mc about his first though, to see what he thinks).

i¨m open to any suggestions on improving the painter section so don´t be afraid to comment here or p.m. me.

so get your thinking caps on lads!

In Photoshop, even though the background layer is locked, you can duplicate it by simply asking to duplicate the layer or dragging it to the "copy layer" icon in Photoshop.

Once that background layer is duplicated you can edit how the layer reacts.

In Painter you can copy the contents of a canvas layer and paste into a new one, however, most people are used to PS' method of duplicating.

The reason I mention this, is that there are a lot of tutorials in PS where if you have lineart, duplicating the lineart layer (especially if scanned in - because it's usually the background layer by default) is one of the first things taught. It's a bit more tricky with painter, and I had encountered many people new to it asking how to do it. Some get upset about "lifting lineart to the watercolor layer" because that changes the behavior of lineart. I usually have to show them to just copy what is on the canvas and paste into a new layer.

Very nifty. Wondering if my thoughts may be beyond the scope of a FAQ, but I know these sorts of questions made a large impact for me. For things like paper/pattern tools, just the mention/overview of these things I think would be very valuable for the unexperienced.

1) How do I create custom brushes in Painter? (and related) How can I import/use photoshop brushes in Painter?

2) How do I make a custom brushes palette and then adjust their positioning?

3) What are patterns/pattern tools?

4) What are papers? What brushes can be used with papers?

5) What's different about the watercolor brushes? (Effectively just to mention the "dry" bits)

6) Which format should I save a file as? (Riff versus PSD)

All I got for now. Hope that helps =)

I think a detailed faq on the brush editor is needed as, to me anyway, it is the most confusing part of painter.

Also a custom pallet faq would be nice as well.

Colour profiles! Would love a indepth on this subject, especially seeing I am working a lot with Painter and Photoshop side by side.

Organizing paper/pattern folders ect. Andrew Jones helped me and others on it a while ago in a thread I started. To be honest I still do not know why it hasn´t been stickied.

Resat/Resaturation controls how much paint is on the brush.

Bleed controls how much existing paint is picked up and painted along with the current color.

Depending on the relative positions of these two sliders, the brush can be made to work as a blender only, or as a painting brush only, or both at the same time.

Experiment to find the right slider settings for what it is you want to accomplish.

Is there a "best" size to work in Painter? I know the larger you go the more memory intensive the file and brushes become, but is there an optimal size that works best for performance or does it all just depend on the computer you are working on?

I've never worked with images exceeding 4500 px x 3000 px, but I assume that working with 7,5k x 10 k in the recent painter versions will just freaking kill it.

Haha, that and it'll eat up the memory used for undo/redo, leaving you in the mud :I

Hi Mateja Petkovic,

After Corel bought Painter and other products from Metacreations in Spring 2000, Procreate Painter 7 was the first version released by Corel.

Procreate was a division of Corel Corporation that handled their graphics products for a short time.

By the time Painter 8 was released, Corel stopped using Procreate (at least in Painter's product name).

which brush exactly are you talking about?
if it's any of painter 11 and 12 real hard media brushes, look under window -> brush settings -> hard media and set up min. V min/H min values to 100 %;
if it's a bristle spray or pixel spray type of brushes, tilt is hard-coded into them
for anything else, look under brush settings -> size and angle and see if any of those are tilt-bound (but I can't think of any painter brush that is by default)

I and I know others have trouble getting the Skratchboard tool to be sharp. Atm on mine it blurs when pressed soft and only hardens when hard and full size. I cant seem to adjust it and I know others have the same issues. So a quick sentence on that would stop the same repetitious questions.
