    Spartan Camp #225 - 50 gestures + Optional "Foreshortened Figure Study (2/2)"

    Spartan Camp #225 - 50 gestures + Optional "Foreshortened Figure Study (2/2)"

The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 27th of May.

    - The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!

    - In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Foreshortened Figure Study (2/2)", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:

    The background:
The one-week deadlines for exercises may sometimes be on the short side. Foreshortening is a tough but very common problem encountered by artists. Drawing a foreshortening shape creates an illusion of the object receding in space, and may require knowledge of perspective and form, and some good thinking.
You'll need to 'wrap your mind' around this one! Hence a two week study.

    The exercise:
Choose a reference image including a foreshortened figure and conduct a long study of this image. "Foreshortened" does not have to apply to the entire pose. Do make sure that at least some part(s) are receding (or advancing towards the viewer/camera)
Since this is a two-week exercise, you can take your time to prepare and create a longer study. You could post a sketch or WIPs in the first week (perhaps using the figure blocks we practised!) followed by a completed image in the second week. This way, we can provide critique to one another while we work.
Of course, you could also just cram it all in the second week if that's what you're more comfortable with!

Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!

50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.

Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!

Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!

This is the second week for our optional study!
I'll be adding some critique for those who posted a sketch in camp #224, so you might want to check back.

So here is my first batch of gestures, most of them are from last week but I though I'd post them in the new thread.

I really tried to focus on minimizing the line and stray away from my past jitteryness.

@Adrian & Bellhop: Nice studies... lots of details.
@7oz: Some of those work pretty well. Others seem too shapeless or have weird overlaps.

SMallPoly: liking the silhouettes, so interesting designs rush to my head, planning to do something with them??? liking the pub sketches sweeeeet!!!
Bellhop: pretty cool animals, i would actually break them down into shapes because the curves are really tricky to do straight off.
7oz: you have improved tons, the last image you posted is a testament to that! I really like some of the females you've done.

    some of mine today:

@Adrian: I don't have any major plans for them at the moment, other than building a personal library of stuff to paint or sculpt. Maybe something later, the next time I take on a larger project.

    hello again

after being away for a while. I'm still around, just not very active here. I'm terrible and being consistent, though I do try and I'm sure that's for the best (for myself)...because...sigh. you see I haven't drawn any figures for a while and it shows.

    hee hee

you know, I don't think I've ever created any Spartan camp sketch in Photoshop, despite being a digital artist. I think this is probably the first time...like, EVER! can you believe that.
anyway, here's my foreshortening study. hope it's ok to do the optional study before completing the 50 gestures:

annd more gestures for the day

Kayness: Wow great studies there Your first batch of 60 sec gestures seemed kind of awkward (Maybe a little jittery or stiff?) but you seemed to have really loosened up on the second batch and its looking good. Really digging your foreshortening study too

Thank you so much! Yes, that's because I haven't done gesture drawings in a while...like, a month or something. You see how fast my skills deteriorate, good thing it took only a few practices to get it back up again i hope to draw figures with flowy lines like you do..some day.
