The Rescue (Acrylic on masonite 17.5" x 24.5")

Here is the second painting I've posted to CA. It's nearly done, but I feel that the foreground still needs a bit of work. Maybe add some foliage so that the "promised land" to which the figures are fleeing looks more inviting, possibly with some cool light source streaming in from the right? Also, I can't figure out what to do with the distant island. should I just lose it or knock it back? Anyway, all comments and criticisms are appreciated!

The giant's neck was first thing I spotted, its very thick,my suggestion would be use references.

Oh,and I would keep the island

I like it. I don't mind the neck's thickness, but personally I'd make the angle of his lower jaw/throat even sharper and more 90 degree-ish (and maybe even have it bee in shadow, without the cast light on the lower jaw) since we're dealing with pretty strong and angular style. Also I'd lose the rimlights on the guy's lower hand, I don't think there would be light cast on it (especially since the baby's back is in shadow) and I don't think they're really necessary either.

Also yeah, I wouldn't say no adding some foliage since for a promised land it is pretty desolate; however in personal terms I might even prefer the more depressing look of it. It makes the image sadder.

Reference isn't a solve-all schtick you throw at everything. This picture is clearly stylized; making it more "realistically correct" would not necessarily improve it.

Thanks for the input. I think you're right about the hands, but I'm probably going to leave them alone at this point. I wish I had posed some friends with lighting to really get the shadows more accurate. Oh well, next time!

I like it, the stylized figure, your color choices are good ... I don't think adding foliage is necessary after all it looks to be dusk so the mystery lies in what they might find in the dawn. I think the Island in the back fits with your rhythm and the angled strokes of the foreground and the clouds and even the branches of the tree are in rhythm ... i really like the contrast of the flames, i think this is a strong piece. -James Lochner
