    Right on!
Sharks kill 4 or 5 people a year. We kill 40 million sharks per year. Removing top predators from ecosystems sends them all out of whack.
Aside from the moral questions of destroying living things so beautiful and complex and irreplaceable they make priceless art look like a joke (and im not just speaking of charismatic megafauna like sharks, but the 3000 species per year driven to extinction by our mismanagement of our environment) but tactically its like setting fire to your sofa to make your room warm; it wont end well at all.
It makes me feel so helpless and sad and worried, i can barely stomach my steak sandwich or my refridgerated-airfreight-from-new-zealand apple.

I hope if we do survive the 21st century we come to be stewards of the earth's biosphere, and the probable ones on Europa and Iapetus and Mars, with an attitude like yours.

edit sorry 30000 species per year, not 3000.

this animal has the worlds coolest animal name. the ghost shark. sadly it couldnt be allowed to be too cool and so was also cruely mocked for its unusual snout and called the elphant shark. i cant see why, it doesnt look silly at all to me.

have you ever seen anything so strange or beautiful as those egg case things? i found a mermaids purse on a beach once, in a tide pool, and when i picked it up i saw there was a live shark embryo inside, moving around. it was amazing. so i threw it on a road.
im kidding i put it in a bin.
im kidding i put it back and later that day fell off a rock and cut th crap out of my leg and side.

    @dpaint

It's a wolf spider. I get those in my house all of the time. They carry their babies on their backs. It is quite horrifying. There is no saving their lives once a swarm of hundreds of baby uglys threaten to infest your house. They are poisonous but not lethal. Hurts like crazy though (for days).

I discovered that since most bugs have a cheltinous exoskeleton a good chelating shower spray will stop them in seconds... Like little statues. I don't kill things unless they're a danger to my family, but wolf spiders qualify.

Ah, we have couple similar cases in this language, this thing has a pretty epic Finnish name, which translated means "herring king" but in English it "rat fish". Or chimaera monstrosa which is better but not as epic as HERRING KING.

And for random weirdness, the pineapplefish:

    And "dolphinfish" or Mahi-Mahi

And how is it possible there hasn't been more Mola Molas (which in Finnish is named roughly something like "lumpfish") in this thread?

or did I just miss them?

And my favorite thing, the gulper eel

A mystery “leak” draining a jacuzzi in South Africa has been explained after tourists caught an elephant drinking from the pool.

“When it was empty in the morning we first called a plumber, but they could not work out why it was draining either.

“Troublesome was caught in the act by a guest at the lodge who just came outside to have some tea on the decking.

“They were quite surprised to see an elephant taking a drink of her own too, and quickly grabbed a camera.

“We’ve seen this elephant a lot before and by the lodge, the rangers call her ‘Troublesome’ not because she causes trouble but because she comes so close to their vehicles.”
For some reason some of these images aren't showing up for me. Bah.

    My Sketchbook

And then God said, "Let us make man in our likeness and our image. Let us make him ridiculously hard to draw so that poor artists everywhere will have to spend 10,000+ hours failing repeatedly before they can begin to capture the form and likeness onto a two-dimensional surface." And there was man. And it was good. And artists everywhere lost their minds.

    That was an African Civet
then this is the Owsten Civet
Much smaller and very different, not even the same species but is still considered a Civet. It's a cross species term apparently.

I'm surprised this thread is still going. I prefer what its turned into; its a hell of a lot nicer that what it started out as!
I'm kind of embarrassed for making this thread in the first place. My posts seem a lot worse reading them a few weeks later.
Reading this thread has made me think about my original post and the first few pages of replies, I realised that all you guys couldn't have the same opinion without there being something to it. (some opinions were more reasonably explained than others, but considering my attitude, I probably deserved it).
I went to the library and picked up a couple of books, the most interesting one being 'Bats' by Phil Richardson, my thinking was something along the lines of: "all these guys can't be idiots", and it made me rethink my own opinions on a lot of wild-life related topics.
Although I still get that primal "get that thing away from me" feeling whenever I see a picture of a bat, learning something about them has definitely stemmed my hatred of the things.
I'm telling you guys this because my original posts make me look like a bit of a tosser, and I don't want to come across that way.

In the spirit of this new thread, I'd like to share an animal I do like: The Aye-aye. While it looks a little creepy, it's actually pretty interesting. You see that long middle finger? It uses that to tap on tree bark and locate a tasty pocket of grubs, it then uses the same finger as a weird hook-thing to get hold of them. Cool, huh?
