d&d art test

Hey guys,

Wizards of the Coast have put up an Art test for would-be artists: D&D ART TEST

Here's my entry for the creatures test. I hope to receive some more crit before sending it off.

one thing you need to watch out for is the hands, notice how the hand holding the jar is not very orc-like. It looks more like an elf hand with it's long thin fingers. So sort that out before you send it as that got my attention straight away.

1. Needs more attention to the volume. Treat the form as a round thing in space; don't trust the flat page. Perspective is good for you.

2. Needs directional lighting. Needs it bad.

3. Most of the problems with this picture cannot be solved without repainting large portions of it. It pays to solve the fundamental problems at the sketch stage, not as an afterthought.

I'm assuming this is meant to be the cook, but to me he's reading more as an alchemist - those don't look like food, they look like potions. (The pans on his belt, as well as the thing on his back and a lot of the jars, all have perspective issues.)

His pose could use some work, too, it's kind of boring in spots (feet) and awkward in others (relation of head to shoulders/ tilt of upper body).

Looks good. I must say that of all the entries to this contest I've seen posted here, this one hits the mark most closely--in terms of style and content it really fits perfectly into the D & D universe.

That said: all the previous posters make some good points--although I wouldn't worry about adding a strong directional light. In my opinion the forms read very clearly already.
