Spartan Camp #222 - 50 gestures + Optional "Figure Balance Study"
The aim is to produce 50 gestures by Sunday the 6th of May.
- The gestures can be of anything, human, animal, cavorting capybaras.... You can draw full figures, but you can also go for heads, arms, eyes, or anything specific. All media can be used, both digital or traditional. Coloured or black/white. Quick scribbles or long studies. Imagination or referenced. Clothed or nude. Specifics are up to you!
- In addition to this, participants can choose to do an Optional "Figure Balance Study", in any medium.
Additional notes on this weeks’ Optional Study:
The background:
A convincing figure has a sense of weight and balance to it. This weeks optional study will focus on finding ways to figure out and implement weight distribution.
The exercise:
How do we practice and study weight and balance? This is a bit of a tough one for me, so I've included numerous links. As can be seen in the resources below, there are different ways to go about it.
- Drawing a vertical line through the figure's center of gravity to the ground is one of them (see link #5). The rest of the body can then be balanced around this central line, giving you some guidance.
- You can draw lines to define the angle under which pelvis and shoulders are placed, helping you balance out the figure. Especially useful if you're going for a Contrapposto kind of pose, which is very common (and a good exercise). Here's a good example.
For now, let's focus on a single figure study where you implement one or several of these tools to create a balanced, solid pose.
A list of resources can be found below:
Reference and Tutorials:
Link1 - Overall info.
Link2 - Some good discussion.
Link3 - Video example using the nose as a point of reference. Seems to me this does not always apply, but an interesting view nonetheless.
Link4 - Google books link.
Link5 - Good advise on the center of gravity.
Next weeks optional:
*editing*
As always- reference advised, not obligatory. Colour, medium, time frame, any specifics are up to you! Good luck and have fun! And feel free to ask questions!
50 poses is a challenge, but don't hurry or stress yourself reaching it! Focus on drawing, as practising is the main goal of this exercise.
Criticizing each other is highly encouraged!! Share constructive criticism, reference images and resources!! Let's help each other get better!
Come on soldiers! Flex those muscles!!
