LePush's Sketchbook | Best Work Last Page

Hey there! i just recently found this community, it seems pretty sick, lots of great artists on here! Im gonna go ahead and post a couple of my works, in hope of some constructive criticism. Im fairly new to digital painting, just started a couple months ago. I greatly appreciate the help. I'll be posting my studies and doodles up here :]

    thanks!

The second was a quick doodle from memory.

hey guys! some constructive criticism would be super duper greatly appreciated on this one!

this is my first legitimate attempt at doing a digital portrait in color. I know its off, i just cant see why at the moment. As always, things will hit me weeks from now, and i'll be like..."oh how did i miss that?!" haha.

another head from imagination. I really struggle right now with getting proportions correct, and drawing the eyes and nose from different angles. I suppose thats what ill be working on.

Yo bro, really like the soldier guy and the girl in #14. The main thing that I thought of looking through this is be more sparing with your use of black/dark values, things are rarely black and you will have to think more critically to imply forms with a lower range of values

thanks! I definitely agree, i think ive been using real low values to kind of escape from defining my forms, haha. Appreciate it, and 'll definitely try to implement that advice!

Hi LePush, thanks for the comments.

I really like your graphic style and you have some flare for mark-making. As for your more realist drawings, I would echo what TFsean said - less black, more half-tones. Apparently Sargent would work almost exclusively in half tones at first when painting, leaving the darks and highlights until last, to use as accents. Also, to check your drafting, flick your eyes back and forth between your photo ref and your drawing - you will almost see the bits you have wrong "moving" as you do so.

I love the Machinegun sketch. It has a lot of energy. The profile of the guy with the helmet thing isn't that good. You would want to do some skull studies to improve the proportians of the head. When I first did them I was blown away by how helpful they are. It's like magic to the head, beyond anything else in the field of face-improvement and such.

Also: I saw the drawing in post #8 in the comments in Sinix' video before I found your thread :p The world is small isn't it?

There's already some style showing through in some of you pieces and that's cool. I'm no animator, but animations from last post contain some nice timing.

I'd advice you to start concentrating on constructing the figure. It will help you understand the planes of the body and reduce flatness (for instance in the Ben Affleck portrait from #5). Check out Michael Hampton's "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention". Glenn Vilppu and Bridgeman are also good resources when it comes to figure construction.

What works for me when drawing from reference / life is to measure allot. Every line if necessary. I also try to check allot of angles against eachother.

Hope this helps out, let me know what you think of those resources if you decide to check them out.

Edit: post #12 shows you're already studying the planes, good stuff. Try to do some more and define the planes with harder edges. These soft ones make it hard to see what's going on.
