ROUND#257, Grunklins

this week my 4 year old nephew described a monster to me so i thought it would be fun for everyone to try and interpret his concept.

here are his words...

(warning this could be a hard round)

"grunklins live in the snow mountains. they like it there because they could jump as high as space so getting up mountains isn't hard. they are very friendly even though people are scared of them because they have big sharp teeth as big as their head. they don't like to eat people cause they only eat candy. they're furry on their head and their legs bug the rest is bald. and they always smile cause of all the candy they eat."

I think that's most of the parts i remember from his description. so this week we're going to take on the challenge of taking a kids thoughts and interpreting them into a cohesive concept. so just have fun with it. laws of physics and ideas about evolution go out the window this week, just have some fun.

Requirements this week...

- Grunklins should be able to jump very high "as high as space"

- Grunklins should have teeth as big as their head.

- Grunklins should have hair on their head and legs, but be bald everywhere else.

- the rest is all filling in the blanks, so have fun and get crazy with this one.

I have been watching the COW thread for awhile now, wanting to join it. I have never felt like I had the skills required, but I finally figured out that the best way to get better is to get help. So I am giving this one COW topic a try in hopes of learning something new. Her is my WIP

Looking pretty good Jiroma, keep putting in some darker values, also I don't think they would have wings, as they jump. Maybe small wings or something, but don't cover the back legs, as thats what most real animals use to jump with. Just some food for thought, as it is open to interpretation. I like the head, its cool!

So, this was my first impression, Probably way to humanoid right? I did this when i started sketching last week, i was going for a half an hour before I realized I was drawing humanoids, I never draw creatures, my mind is struggling with this kinda'.

first time in a while on these forums. Is this too human?
I have a hand-in for uni in the next few weeks, so don't know if I'll be able to finish this challenge.

Basically, this guy has a giant mouth in his stomach, with one huge tooth on the bottom used to grind up the sweets (it grinds while he walks).

The fat is to keep him warm up in the mountains, of course. His legs may look a little stumpy, but you'd be surprised of the power they can muster up, and they have huge flat feet to put up with the huge problem of landing at high speed. His face-tusks are to help open any wrappers he comes across.

my idea to make the teeth as big as the head other then protruding teeth is to make the teeth on another part of the body. took some ideas from caterpillars (head bumps and head bump bristles) and grasshoppers (legs). in relation to size, fleas are the highest jumping animals on earth. maybe we should look to their leg design for inspiration.

After a few ideas, and checking back here to see what everyone else was up to I decided on this guy for my Grunklin. I'm just not sure if teeth taking up the majority of his head counts as "as big as [its] head". Everyone seems to be taking that idea a little bit differently...



(Oh and don't mind his being squished, i was too lazy to open a bigger image so i crammed him in there xD It is only my initial idea after all.)

Jiroma - I love what you've done with the teeth. Would like to see more of the body,though...And though you'll lose a lot of the "wing" appearance once the hair is colored, maybe make it shaggier and vary the length of the hair to make it more evidently a limb.
