    Thanks guys

    Not dead, just busy!

Here's something I just finished up. I was hoping to include all of Einstein's theorems but I couldn't get the symbols to type out so I just made do with the most well known one.

I tried to be a bit more painterly with this one, particularly with the hair, and still trying to play with edges.

Also did a step by step, just because I haven't really done one before.
It's too big to post here so you'll have to check the blog or website!

    Also one without type,

    Keep it gangsta'

Looking great Dan. Your illustrations are coming along well. I love the Pied Piper one. Simple and strong composition. Einstine one is wicked too. Only thing I can suggest you start thinking about is personal point of view. What do you want to say with your work that sets you apart from the thousands of other illustrators. Explore, experiment and discover and you'll go far. Keep on working hard man.

    Slim pickings.

Few images I started then abandoned at various stages. Everything I seem to draw up recently is just boring, going to spend a while just sketching and stuff for a while I think. I don't draw nearly as much as I should.
That's me with my dragon and tiger, I call them Rosie and Jim.

Also something I finished up yesterday. Please try to contain yourself, I know the composition is explosive...

    Hi Dan,
First of all, thanks for your comments on my SB.
Your work is great. I really like you last piece. The colors, composition and render are great. About the other with the dragon and tiger, i´d work more on the dragon´s shape and features. It seems you simplify the shape, its like a little bit of cartoon. I dont know if it was your intention. But i´d look some refs to put more power on the dragon

    See you!

Hey Dan I love the latest 'Steve' painting, the facial expression is great and makes it so funny. Also love the skull and the old man drawing, can I ask was that from life or ref? Really glad to hear you are busy with work, despite all the economic troubles.

Lovely updates Dan. Your rendering of light on form is beautiful in the death piece. I see some Foster creeping into your dragon tiger piece, as I know you are a fanboy of his

Thanks peeps, and Marian the old man was from a photo unfortunately; I don;t know anyone with that awesome a beard.

Few more scraps in the few hours downtime I've had waiting for client feedback etc. the job is almost done now, working on the last image, then I'll have lots of time to actually improve and study again.

Got a failed piece with a boat, it's a concept I've tried to paint before but I once again failed miserably. One day I will paint a successful image with a woman who's blowing hair becomes the rough waves of a ship. The composition was all wrong, just wrong!

Next some quick film poster I did four a friend, he had a very specific idea in his head of what he wanted, here's the 2 sketches I did and the final.

Also an image I've been noodling on on and off for a few months now, based on the 'Electric Lady' for which my brothers tattoo shop was named. It's so incredibly cliched and follows every stereotype of the fantasy genre...and I love it! Pretty happy with how bits are shaping up, it's my guilty pleasure painting when I'm sick of work.

    That's all for now,

    Peace

    Dan

Hey Dan that's a great idea of the women's hair making the waves for a ship. Have you thought of making the ship smaller and and maybe making the women's face in colour changing to monotone in blues for the hair and then the ship in blues aswell like it is lit by moonlight?

Also like the film poster, I prefer the second one as the little girl makes a strong silhouette. I'm just not sure the moon works in it as it so well. Had you thought of putting in the meteor as in the first one and using the burn round it to draw the eye to the film title. Posistioning as in the first one? Just some thoughts, please choose to ignore.

Thanks Marian, that would probably work way better! But until I can get a really strong composition the colour is all in vain I think, this one just isn't strong enough. I'll study some more then have another crack at it in a few months. So far the strongest sketch I've done has been with the face and the boat both facing forwards, but I'm hesitant it use it as so much of my stuff seems to be that basic forward layout, what do you think?

As for the poster I preferred the 2nd sketch as well, again I think you're right on the money with the changes. Alas the client/friend preferred the first one, so that one got finished.

Hey Dan I do feel at the moment that the direction of the ship and the face are clashing and also that the proportions of the face hair and canvas all seem to be the same giving the effect of it being split in half horizontally. I think you need to decide what you want the focal point to be, either the ship, the face of the hair? At the moment I feel the ship should be a lot smaller. I think a balance of two thirds for the bottom (face and hair), one third for the ship and a bigger sky.

You have drawn me right in with the concept of this so I shall keep mulling it over if you don't mind and come back if I get any good ideas. I am imagining a mermaid rising from the sea to claim the ship and drag it down to a watery death. Her hair becomes a turbulent sea of waves with the ship being thrown up on the crest of a wave, full sails blowing in the wind...will the survive...or all face the beauty of their death.

Thanks again for taking the time Marian, it's on the back burner for now but one of these days I'm going to make it work! It's fast becoming my white whale, which reminds me I must do a Moby Dick illustration at some point, probably should read the book as well......

Anyway, my big super awesome job is done so I have been able to do my own stuff the last few weeks. It's been fun but my goodness do I need to study. On the bright side I can now show some of the stuff I've been working on for the Olympics. I'll feed them in as I get sign off and the relevant credits.

The job was creating the illustrations for 35+ posters for the Get Ahead of the Games Olympic campaign, aiming to raise awareness and provide solutions to the inevitable chaos the London Olympics will have on transport across the city and the UK. There were numerous awesome artists working on the project, often several of us on each poster due to the sheer number of them. As soon as I get the names of who did what on what poster I'll post more of them but until then you get the ones that are all my handy work (and have been released).
First up are a few character concepts for one of the posters, and then the sketch and final paint of one of the characters used in the online campaign. More to come!

Then we got some studies and some of the stuff I've been working on, I'd love some feedback on the latter two. Got an Ender's Game cover and the same cover with my diabolical typography skills, then an in progress painting for Northern Lights. Oh and some random character sketches for a failed James and Giant Peach cover.

    Thanks,

    Dan

Looking splendid Dan. That business man in shorts is killer. I like some of the fantasy work your doing as well. It would be cool to see that finalized, my only crit for her is the raised hand gets a bit lost in the values of the background. The alien concepts are cool too. Try adding some variation to the specularity on the skin. Places where it might be more wet or dry.

Really nice update, Dan! Those latest characters are looking really nice. And the first painting has a very nice mood and flow in it. You should definitely update more often

Thanks everyone, took a break from everything I had going and just noodled on a sketch the last few days. Shouldn't have wasted the time really, composition and flow is terrible, but was fun so onwards and upwards.
