Hi all, welcome to my gallery.

From Dec 2008 I decided to teach myself Art Foundation and encourage my dreams to develop of one day working as a Conceptual Illustrator in game and film production.
Until then, I`ll enjoy entertaining and hopefully inspire others with my personal work.

The New World

Spanish sailing ships venture down the watery avenues of Times Square, New York and discover The New World.

I wanted to create a matte painting depicting an alternative moment Christopher Columbus discovers The New World.

i like it- its a cool image-

i do however think u should take an atmosphere pass on some of those buildings - at the moment everything seems a bit flat and on the same level.....just knock the buildings back a bit.........

in the distance and near the ships with a 12% opacity white pass with an airbrush in photoshop.

also there seems to be an issue with that right hand ship and the chevy building there..... just so many linear lines to close to each other...the atmosphere pass might clear it up a bit...but i might still change the angle slightly on that ship

Charles Ratteray: Hey man, thanks for the feedback. Yeah, I am starting to see some issues that I'm not 100% happy with. I was a little blind before to any problems, no doubt because I had worked on it for so long. Your suggestions I'll take onboard when I get around to making any reworkings.

This is my entry for the IFX Monthly Challenge: A Storm Rising.

My idea for the challenge? The world awakens to a massive ring shaped UFO (ringworld) that completely encompasses our entire planet- First Contact on a global scale.

This is the moment when unmanned drones are launched for surveillance operations.

I wish I had more time to play with it, though thats the beauty of deadlines- submit what you've got and learn from it.

I'll keep you on watch, man. This is really good stuff---I suggest you flip the painting around a lot---dont know if you do that or not, but it helps me find areas that need more touching up that i wouldn't have noticed before. Keep going!

Yeah, I flip my paintings around a lot more now than I ever did. Once I finish something though, I pretty much like to call it done. No paintings perfect and past paintings can serve in the same manner as sketchbooks do- they show progression (if one is honest with oneself to always grow as an artist that is).

I thought I recognised your work. I seen ur recent feature in Concept Ships. Good work dude

I seem to be hooked on forum challenges at the moment. This one is from IFX's August Challenge, "From Ancient China".

Its not as completed as I'd hoped for, though I met the deadline thats the most important thing. I wanted to add TONS more little fishing boats in the foreground stretching right out into the distance.

I came up with the idea of setting the concept in our distant future where the Shanghai World Financial Center is all that is left "from Ancient China". Civilisation has continued to survive by building onto whats left of the skyscraper.

This really tested me. I loved this challenge and learned alot from participating in it. I had to incorporate at least one 3D element which meant I had to learn a 3D program from scratch. Google sketchup seemed like the obvious choice to begin with.

In the Ancient World, Avernus was believed to be the entrance to the underworld.

This was name and design of the ship I gave my EVE Online entry (only I missed the f#cking deadline. Totally pissed at myself for that!! Schematics are a biatch though) Thought I'd share anyway.

Ship Description

The Avernus is a small warship (386m). Its fast and heavily armoured at the front with devestating firepower designed to punch through the most concentrated areas of enemy lines during initial fleet engagements. Its weakest to the rear where armour is sacrificed for overpowered engines.

The Avernus is designed to work in packs and isnt suited to one on one engagements.

I managed to finish this painting in 8 hours. Incredibly fast for me so I'm really happy with it from that point of view.

Created for CGHubs New World challenge "Dr Frankensteins Lab", I was inspired by the Resident Evil games for my concept. I also wanted to show a families legacy as if generations of Dr Frankensteins had been working on perfecting the monster by using different technologies over time.


I used a technique inspired by James Clyne which he uses in pre-visualisation for films as concepts need to be churned out incredibly fast. He terms it photoshop kit bashing- mixing/cutting photographs and textures with a nice healthy dose of painting. You can see similar works in T4: Salvation, Avatar and Star Trek concept art books.

Only thing I would say is you've used mainly stock sci fi tropes: giant hanging ID4 spaceship buzzed by jets, a flooded NYC, Bladerunner skyscrapers, glowing data screens.
Id love to see how you handle the stranger stories science fiction generates.
I really like the junks outside the ancient arcology and the anachronistic galleons. If you like that vibe try Cordwainer Smith's strange deep future fiction. He wrote the CIA psych warfare manual and was the god son of Sun Yat Sen the "Founding Father of Republican China." His stories are infused with those influences.

Hey man, thank you for looking at my work. What exactly is "strange deep future fiction"? The very term is giving me ideas, so I'm just looking for some direction.

I'm always looking for new ideas to tackle. This sounds like a cool one.

The Ogres have plagued the Wastelands of E'nohpelet for centuries past,
but in recent times their lust for blood has grown greedy and their shadow
has cast upon from wide to far across lands that it never should.

They have a Champion it is said, of Slayer of Kings. His greed is mighter
than that of all the hordes of E'nohpelet. He gives honour to any newly
slain Kings head as a centre piece upon his chest where there it'll
rest and rot from flesh to bone. And as the blood from the Kings head
dries on his cauldron belly his fiery appetite roars once more and his
hordes are called upon to wage war and bring chaos, this time West where the
Kingdoms of Elves and Man lie.
