    won't stop trying

    Hey,
My name is Melanie and I'm 19 years old (must admit that ).
I'm going to pass the abitur exam in about three weeks (oh boy...I'm so nervous about that).

Well.. this is my first sketchbook I felt ashamed for my drawing skills when having a look at your awesome works.
However, I decided not to fall into depression but to practice and practice and practice instead.

I really want to become better and that's why I ask you for critique and support. I'd be very thankful.

    so far,
    Melanie

    I drew that today..
As you can see, it is neither anything special, nor elaborated, but hopefully it helped me improving.

    I'm sorry for my english.

Yay, you already opened a sketchbook

As I asked you on facebook: Did a quick overpaint - CLICK
As you notice, the facial proportions were already alright.
A few things to care about:
    - Take your time and don't rush. Make sure that it looks clean ^.^
    - Take a look at the facial features. Especially the form of the nose. Seems like you was kind of unsure about it (even though mine looks .. strange too y.y )

Keep it up and show mooooooooore work!

    Heyhey. Welcome to CA!

The best thing you can do is just don't care about comparisons between you and other guys in here since the most of us work hard for a loooong time. I'm here for about two years now and I don't even feel "good" when I see work some other guys do.^^

But it's just not about that. I've been too lazy all the time. So just go on and do your stuff. Get your pencil, tablet or whatever, make a small plan and start working. That's what works for me. Did two years of asking myself how to get better portraits... some weeks ago I found out that it's good not to only look in the pictures of an anatomy book but read it carefully.

Whatever, keep going and show what you got!
The portrait looks good. Good proportions and good values.
And your english is getting better after some time in here. Like mine did, too. Haha.

    Keep it up,
    Flo

    Hey Melanie,

    welcome to Conceptart.org!

I hope you soon enjoy creating art as much as we all do and don´t be afraid! It may seem difficult at first, but you will build up confidence in your skills as soon as you practice regularly and see them improving

As for critiquing: the face seems slightly off balance. I have the impression the chin is a bit too much on the right. But the rest already looks very good and I see a lot of potential! Keep going!

Good luck, tons of motivation and have fun! :>

    Cheers,

    Agarwaen

Everything looks good, except the hair. The white lines make it seem like glass or water (especially the blended ones).
The right eye might be too far right. Might want to try moving it left, lining up with the side of the nose as it did with the left eye.

    And welcome!

Thank you so much for the nice words, critique and hints (< is that the right word?) you gave me.

I'm really busy at the moment (school sucks so much)which is why I don't have any time to draw ..just learning the whole time for the exam.
But I promise, as soon as I have time again, I'll draw more calmly
    ...and more stuff in general.

Printed out some pictures which deal with human anatomy..hopefully, I can study them very soon. :>

    back2topic:

My internet didn't work for 4 days..(I live in a small village)
However, I worked. Not only for the upcoming exam in about one week (please kill me..), I made an overpaint myself and tried to correct some of the ...uhm...points you criticized.
Furthermore, I confronted myself with the male build....yeah.
(Hab das Gefühl, das war ein recht epischer englisch-fail )

There's still such a long way to go...

Great that you are doing your first digital studies.
Are you doing traditionel drawings with a pencil too?
I would really suggest it, because traditionell drawing is just awesome.
Going outside with a sketchbook and just painting stuff like tree's, houses, ... is awesome!
Photograph some drawings if you don't have a scanner.

Your last portrait already looks a lot better.
Be sure to check your proportions.
You tend to make the eyes a little bit too big because of your past manga style ;>
    So only things to critique:
    - Make the eyes a little bit smaller
-> The nose a little bit bigger so the uhmm (sry german now) Nasenflügel grenzen mit einer graden Linie nach oben an die Augenanfänge, also die kleinen Ausläufe vor den Augen. Wie auch immer man die nennt o.o

    Keep it up ^.^

Sil (hab ich schonmal erwähnt, dass ichs lustig finde, wie wir von einer wow gilde jetzt hier gelandet sind? xD)

Of course, I'm doing traditional drawings. I'm just using my tablet at the moment so many times, because I wanna gain confidence in working with it. But I think you're right. I should practice more with a normal pencil

You tend to make the eyes a little bit too big because of your past manga style
Yes, your right It is still difficult for me to abbandon that style. I definitely have to work on it.

    Thank you for the critique!

Homework: do some heads (let's say 20) with a thick marker with which you can not put any details in (n' dicker Edding oder so), only trying to figure out the proportions That should fix your problem with the proportions of the eyes

Great start to a sketchbook, and dont feel disillusioned about being 19, there are plenty of artists on here that started from nothing at 30+ years old and are now professionals.

Personally I started at 21 and I haven´t looked back (almost 24 now).

As a criticism from me I would recommend doing more pencil works and posting them here. The criticism you receive regarding traditional work is always useful for digital too, but it allows people to see your weak and strong points more clearly.

I hope that helps, and good luck!

ThomasM many thanks for your encouraging words as well as your criticism.

Charmer/Flo I know my homework is still undone ...but thank you for the suggestion, I'll try to do it!

Wish my exams would be over :/ Had to pass the first one on Friday and tomorrow will be the next one.
And to complete my misery I got a slight Tenosynovitis (leichte Sehnenscheidentzündung...mal wieder) because I had to write so much the last weeks

Wheeeeere the heck are your updates? Draw with the other hand, it doesn't matter what your hand does, drawing happens in your brain. Raaaaawwwrrr!

    !UPDATE!

Even though I mustn't draw, Charmer frightened me so much that I drew something! D:
    Just kidding.
My hand still hurts after 2 minutes when drawing but it's getting better, yeah!
So, here's my homework (it was difficult) and another sketch. Quality is bad, because I took the photos with my sellphone's camera.

Glad to see some updates from, even if you have problems with your hand.

If you're using such a big green marker, like you did above, try to draw bigger.
At this size you can't concentrate on the proportions very good.

But the figures are looking very nice!
I'm impressed. Of course, there are still some proportions and anatomy things to fix, but definitely an awesome start.

Just practice anatomy and use what you learned directly afterwards.

    Sil ^.^
