Here are a couple illustrations I've done more or less recently. One is an entry for an illustration competition for a student's song book, the other is my entry for the Gotta have a Hook challenge on artorder.blogspot.com

This is from back in 2008 (which feels super-long ago to a student like me) and I see a TON of more "technical" problems with it now...

But I choose this one because I was intentionally going after a mood with it. I thought it would be a good idea to try to keep the values high-key even with a wistful/sad theme.

But facial expressions are hard for me to handle. I hate pushing them into any well-defined emotion because I'm afraid they'll look contrived and corny.

Do you think I should've pushed the face more?

These are personal fine art pieces inspired by recent yogic studies in India.

I feel that an issue I am currently working on is simplicity vs. over embellishment. This one is a work in progress. Feedback I've been getting on it suggests that I should focus less on the ornamentation and more on the emotional content expressed via anatomy. How to show emotion with limited facial features? Could you say a few words on what makes for expressive hands?

We all need to create affinity groups which are subsets of the much larger community that we’re part of. And then, using this technology, which was designed to keep track of us, to pick our pockets, and to sell us junk we don’t want, use this technology to produce art. Massive amounts of subversive art.'

And here's a couple of pieces I lkiked when I made them, but now that I've been learning more stuff, I realize I didn't hit the right emotion I wanted to convey..however , I'd like to hear some crits about it, and a way to improve them.
    Thanks.

It was nice to meet you all in the class!

    @ Eclypse

The first one looks nice, i dig the colors and the purple fog running down turned out nicely!
Also like the light horn on her head.
The image could use more depth, the background layers darker, less saturated.
The glowing yellow orbs at the bottom take away all the focus from the character, i wold drop them or make them a lot more subtle.

The second image is looking good! i like the lighting and the subtle red glow that comes from the bottom, the character pops nicely against the darker BG on the left side
The both characters in the foreground need more work, they look rather rough compared to the rest. Adding more contrast and black would add more depth too.

    cheers

    Ok...a few things mr. Eclypse.

    1. the first image has a nice ecstatic gesture on the female figure. However her lighting is causing her to read poorly, especially at first glance. The area where her neck area needs some revisiting and so do her arms. It is almost like you need to do one more pass on it where you zoom in and clean up the focal area so it reads better. The fang like spires that poke upward might be cool to have some areas of transparency too. They feel a little opaque and weighted now. If that is on purpose so be it.

    2. Your Mordor image has a great mood and you nailed the palette...but it is as if I have seen it before many times. I think you could push the re-design much much further. It makes me wonder what you might do without having pre-conceived notions of what it might be, other than the readings in the books. The towers are far less dramatic than the film, and the landscape is less epic. The tower designs are not quite as intense and powerful as they could be, given it is Mordor. Your focal area in the image is not quite cleaned up enough to read well. This is a similar issue to number one.

Both those images could be excellent and should be. Adding in another pass to refine and define a primary, secondary, and tertiary focal area will bring your work to the next level. Along the way rework the designs of the key elements until you are certain it is the best design you can do. You can do this. Never let it go with it's good enough. You need to push that last five percent.

You are getting the basic concepts of shape and color for mood, as well as body language in the instance with the female in the nebula. You will get where you need to go in time. You are going to need to put the time in and really bite down even more. I will look forward to watching your progress as time wears on.

Thanks for posting those and for joining us in class.

    problem with download

Wish I had feed back. I am pretty bummed out. I got the download no prob but when I went to open it I was told my system does not support it. I have an older osx. I sent a letter to the webmaster @ concept and hope that will resolve the problem. I bought two of the on demands to support concept org but now am out 40.00 w/ nothing to show for it
When I filled out the billing address it was for my older one from when I first got my c card. Now I live in a different state. I included all this info in a letter to the webmaster at org but my initial e-mail was returned to sender. So I sent a second one w/ all my info and decided to post here as well. I do not want my money back I just want to watch the class because I love u guys work...
Hope this will let me work it out.

I would recommend contacting either Jason Manley himself with a private message or asking the art department guys. You can ask Jason by clicking on his name at the top of this page and selecting "send private message" and explain your situation. I am sure he can put you onto the right help if he can't fix the issue himself. The art department guys, who handle all the sales, use the name TAD_Orders which you can search for in the private messages section. You can find the private message section near the top of your page on the right where it says "welcome, nandog".

Hope you get it sorted out.

Hey, sorry but I don't know where else to ask the following:
If one buys a streaming class that has already occured Live, then you just get a video to download and watch on your own time? Is this correct?
If somebody could Pm me how that process works, I would really appreciate it, because it isnt fully clear to me what I get once I pay.

Hey, for some reason I felt it to be a good exercise to implement Jason's and Randis' critiques to your piece to see how it will enhance the image. I am glad I did, as the composition got a bit better in my opinion.

(I realise this all happaned a long long time ago, and this is no longer relevent, but I just watched the on demand class today.)

I'm just watching this for the first time On Demand, and found Youtube copyright blocked the fourth clip (the one after the Black Knight). What was it, and does anyone know where I can find something similar to follow along? Thanks.
