Mentor available for beginners to intermediate

I love answering questions and helping people out (especially with technical stuff that is confusingly explained elsewhere, or hard to understand). I read a lot so if there's something I don't know well, usually I will at least be able to give a point in the right direction.

I'm not very prolific art-wise, so if you're concerned with me not knowing what I'm talking about, I'll be sure to provide full explanations, links with cites, rival ideas on the subject, whatever, and I'll say immediately if it's something I don't know well.

Here's what I can help with and to what extent:

    Color: Advanced
    Light: Intermediate-Advanced
Perspective: Intermediate (though if you have any question, I will try my darnest to find out the answer)
    Photography: Intermediate-Advanced
    Composition: Intermediate
    Anatomy and proportion: Beginner

    Anything else: ask.

If you're a beginner, I can be nice and gentle with criticism without dumbing anything down. This stuff is fascinating, and I'm of the opinion learning art should never be boring or painful, and one can learn faster if it isn't.

Don't be shy. Ask me anything!

PS: If you're around my level and just want a Sketchbook buddy, or someone to talk about art with, work stuff out with, whatever, I'm totally up for that too.

    hi lulie

I could use a sketchbook buddy I've been drawing infrequently for the last several years, partially because I've lacked people pushing me and encouraging me... Nobody IRL even knows I have a sketchbook here on CA, so drawing and art is rather detached from the rest of my life. I don't necessarily need help in any particular areas, but I could definitely benefit from someone like yourself.

About me... I'm a college student in the US right now, majoring in computer science and minoring in visual arts, hoping to go into animation. I've never been able to draw people or expressions / gestures, so this semester I picked up a figure drawing book and have been learning all that I can.

    Whadda ya say?

    I'd love a mentor/ buddy.

What exactly is a sketchbook buddy at CA, though? Is it to commit to give mutual crits?

Yeah, I suppose so. I know lots of other people do it. We just keep up with eachother's sketchbooks, offer mutual crits, and give eachother shit when we've been slacking and haven't posted any updates in a while.

Leo: I thought I was already subscribed to your sketchbook but I guess not! Subscribed now, anyway. I figured we were already pretty much mentor-buddies. (I've always thought of you as kind of an unofficial mentor, anyway. If there's anything you think I might know, do ask! If it's relating to colour, chances are I'll know.)

There's no official sketchbook buddy, but Christian summed it up well.

    Hi Lulie

You are exactly what I was looking for, let me know if you will still be able to mentor me. I need help with lighting and color. I still haven't put up a sketchbook. Let me know so we can chat and I can tell you where I'm at.

KC - I actually am intending to do something of a tutorial on light, but there are several good ones online already. I'll find them and post them tomorrow.

Previsha - Yep, sounds good! Will take it on PM. And put up a sketchbook already!

Hi Lulie, For some reason I can not PM you, not sure what's the problem. So here's my message.

Firstly, thank you so much for getting back to me, and so soon. Im sort of a beginner, wanting to learn digital art. I currently trying to learn to draw the human figure as well and learn digital art environments. I love art and its my passion so I am hoping to make it a career. So any way you can help me, I will appreciate it.

Abit about myself, I live in South Africa, I have a full time job as a Graphic and Webdesigner, but my passion is digital art. I am willing to put in the hard work and hours to make my love of art a reality.

This is my second piece of digital painting. To me the colors are off, the light sucks and basically it doesn't stand out. Any ideas on what I can do.

A mentor and study buddy would be awesome I'm studying anatomy and perspective lately which I definately still have lots to cover but my weakest areas are color and light, I'm 17 years old and in high school and I'm motivated and I study as much as I can so ANY advice or help would be much appreciated. To check out my sketchbook just click the link below and pm me if your answer is yes to joining.thx

    Hi everyone,

I've been busy lately so haven't had much time and replies may be delayed, but feel free to PM me if you have art questions and I'll try to help you out when I can.

For those of you who want help with their work or more general comments, please start a sketchbook thread. Get help from the whole community. That way I can follow your progress and give comments.
