zou: Well, I'm not sure why I clothed them more to be honest, usually I'm a fan of less clothes, not more For some reason I was inspired to draw a winter jacket...
Crane: Hey, good to have you on board! I guess everyone has their own "gimmick" - to me characters are simply the most interesting subject matter, so when I have time to draw that's what I usually do. I do want to do some colour studies.

    ---

Some sketches and some character templates in a style I'm completely unfamiliar with...

    hi

your red head woman and the one next to it is great
the little bottom characters are nice too, but the shading is very shy no ? you should try to flat shade them (like in cartoon) then blend a bit

the stair figure are good too, (some proportions issues)

keep up , your drawing is becoming better

gonna echo zou and say the red head is the strongest, but her nose seems a little big, is it from ref?

zou: Thanks! I didn't render the small character templates more because I'm going to to draw/paint over them anyway, so I didn't want to put too much work into it.

Crane: You're right, that nose was a bit massive. Didn't use any ref, that's probably why

    ---

I printed out the character templates and used pencil, colored pencil and copic markers to explore different designs on them.

Great SB. Thank you for sharing. Is there a reason you didn't choose to color those last character sheets you posted digitally? it seems it prob would have been easier!
J: Don't call my escorts hookers.
    B: Mom's still got it!
    J: I don't date whores!
L: This objectification of women has to stop!
M: It's just mom and whores...

NakedZergling: Mostly because I'm more comfortable and work faster and looser traditionally. I wanted those to be quick and easy to make, and when I work digitally, I often get too focused on details and rendering. Thanks for dropping by!
    Angel: Thank you

Sorry for the long absence. In the process of moving, hopefully will have a scanner up and running soon, so I can make a more substantial update. In the meantime, here's some more stuff in the same vein as above.

Edit: Also, it seems my thread thumbnail has been changed over the course of the forum upgrades. Anyone know how to change it again? It seems to me after some testing, that I might have to move the entire first post into the second post.

    Heya!

That better be one humongously voluminous massive update!
Either way I'm also looking forward to seeing more stuff from the game you're working on. It's student work right? so you should be able to post it at some point? Of the latest batch I like the bottom left one especially. Nice and clear shapes, can be read easily. Also not as straightforward as some of the other designs. This one is a bit more complex. Metal bras can be a tricky thing though... But I guess that depends on the actual project.
I'd say the ninja(?) type characters are a little on the dark side and too monochromatic. I'd agree if you would say assassin type characters shouldn't stand out. These may be taking it too far though.
Got some sketches lying around, still going to do a rework from one of these characters at some point. Will notify you when posting.

good luck/have fun moving. Awaiting your posts!

    Angel: Thank you very much!
zou: Thank you! Maybe you're right about the eyes. The figures posted here are much bigger than they will appear in the game however (on a mobile phone screen), so I was thinking the colours had to be intense to read properly. That said, I haven't actually tested the figures on an actual mobile screen yet, so I can't be sure.
Anthis: I get what you're saying about the detail levels on the figures - I also like the bottom left one. However, like I said in my response to zou, these are quite a lot bigger than what they will be in the game, and I am actually worried that the bottom left one has too much detail and is too hard to read. I'll attach a small version that's about the size they will be in the end.

    ---

Alright, so this isn't as big an update as I would've hoped it would be, but to be honest I haven't been drawing as much as I should have. So this is the majority of what I've got actually.

Great costume design as always I think the bottom left sprite design works quite well, especially with the white and blue mixed with the brown leather, it's quite a solid design. Do you do small thumbnails first to see if it would work before you draw them?

Hm, they're quite small to begin with. I just roughly sketch the shapes I want - with particular details if they're important. Actually, I would say most of the time I have an idea to start with, be it a certain shape or silhouette or colour scheme. I haven't had to scribble aimlessly on top of the template to find a new design yet

So, here's some more stuff. I watched a film called Detachment some time last week I think. Such a depressing movie, I think I had a reaction to it. When it finished I sat and pondered for a while, and I realized I feel like drawing nature, trees, flowers, people - not characters, but people. But now I suck at it. At times I wish I had spent my time with art studying classically. Maybe I could practice these things now, but between my part time job and game art/design/production I don't feel I have the time. Whether that is an excuse I construct to protect my laziness however (or even worse, my ego), I'm not entirely certain. Life sucks, everything is hard, nothing is easy.

Don't be too hard on yourself Hai, it's never too late to go back to the fundamentals, I squeeze in what I can at work or on the bus etc, if you want it bad enough you'll find time, but if you don't feel like it that's ok too. Just keep at it. (if you want some motivation then I recommend listening to Dan Warren's stream http://www.youtube.com/feed/UCJQjJzvYzayxamBo-DGHBkw - his freelance talks with Dave Rapoza are inspiring)
