The OFFICIAL Nude Figure Life Drawing Thread

This time I almost exclusively used the fat black Lyra Color-Giant pencil. I am still using the Canson Biggie sketch pad. The hard pencils feel fairly close to what Conte pencils feel like on smooth newsprint. Conte is still nice and waxier whereas the Lyra feels more like graphite, but the Lyra lead is sturdier. You can press down a bit harder. That's one thing I hate about Conte pencils: they tend to be delicate. They break a lot more than the other ones seem to.

This first one is 5 minutes. It's a bit blockier than I usually do these quicker poses. For some reason I draw with more straight lines with a pencil than with a compressed stick.



The next two drawings are 10 minutes each. They were fun. I felt warmed up quicker than I normally do by this time. I'm not totally sure why.





This was the girl I drew instead of the model, totally stalked her with my eyeballs... CREEPYYYY



I felt like I was pretty good with the lighting today. More so than usual.



This is a tough position to draw. It's harder than it looks. Trying to draw it as I saw it didn't look quite right. I had to "lipo" some areas of her figure.



A ten minute drawing to finish off the night. I used the Ritmo charcoal pencil this time. The hair was the most successful area in my opinion.

For sketching my personal favorite is a black conte crayon block. For long poses I WORSHIP vine charcoal. I just love the stuff. It's like painting with charcoal! I use the vine charcoal in conjecture with compressed charcoal and charcoal pencils.

MainLoop-Love the energy, gesture and feel of your drawings. real great images. what medium is that conte? charchoal?




Intern-good form and lighting. personally i'd like to see some more contrast and some background or some sort of environment behind the figure. good stuff tho.

If you esteemed fine artists will scooch over and make room for me, I'll add a few drawings to the thread. My first life drawing sessions in a lot of years. Rusty isn't the half of it. Same pose, different viewing position, pencil, an hour to an hour and a half each.

This weekend I had the extreme pleasure of drawing a new model with an amazing skill. She is an incredibly talented seamstress who makes her own period costumes. She made this Revolution-Era costume which she was gracious enough to pose in.



The thing weighs about 15 pounds, which doesn't seem that crazy until you have to pose in it.



I was also trying these Nitram Fusains charcoal sticks. They are like a compressed vine charcoal. Even the softest sticks are still pretty hard, but they are fun to work with. They have the strength of compressed charcoal with the flow of a hard vine charcoal.



These were done in 2-minute intervals. Seems like a tough subject to tackle right? The trade-off between the complexity of the fabric is the simplicity you can take advantage of by not having to draw legs and feet.




Not super-proud of the chair on this one but I like the head. Can't say for sure how long this pose was but I think it was about 15 minutes.



Twenty minutes. Other than her right arm getting a bit wonky, I like it. She added a few accesories to this one.



Wearing the dress finally wore her out. She switched back to nude 2-minute poses, which she excels at.



One of my favorite drawings of the day. This was essentially done by tracing the core shadow down throughout the body. It's super tempting to work more on it, but it's almost always best to leave it alone at this stage.



These 2 were attempts to capture what I had just done with the previous drawing, with less satisfying results.



Rounding out the series of drawings. Can you tell how tired we all were by now?

I have been an admirer of this thread for a few years. Every time I'm in need of inspiration and a new direction I browse through the drawings and come away with a new direction to explore. I thought I'd add a few of my efforts and hope they don't look too sad in comparison with the great drawings on show here.
