    ROUND #237: Fat Dragon

    Brief:

    ROUND#237 - Fat Dragon

Looking at high fantasy, dragons tend to be depicted as majestic, magical and powerful beasts. But what of their dejected cousins? The dumpy, ticked off cousin species that got the short end of the gene pool. This week your challenge is to design just that: a species of dragon that is not only a little bit fat (or extremely fat, your call) as dragons go, but is also lacking in the majesty bestowed upon their more revered brethren. Think about things like whether or not its wings would be vestigial due to it’s weight; whether or not it has a breath weapon and what that might be. Perhaps even think about what the creature’s attitude might be like considering its kin. What causes it’s weight, is it more genetic, like a pachyderm might be, or does it simply have a gluttonous lifestyle. Do remember to bear in mind, though, that you aren’t designing one dragon that happens to bear these qualities, but an entire species.

    Round Requirements:
    - The creature must be visibly identifiable as a dragon

    - The dragon must be rotund in build

    - The creature’s personality/outlook should be relatively visible in the drawing.

    Deadline:

    November 23rd, 9:00pm PST (GMT -8 )

    Finals go here: http://conceptart.org/forums/showthr...87#post3303487

andreaC Cool sketch, would be cool to see it pushed forward.

amyersco Nice bit of brainstorming you've been doing. Don't forget to work those values before adding too much colour. Keep it up

Cool topic, not sure how well this fits the topic but was fun anyways.

That's my topic - love dragons (pff who here doesn't)

Here's my current wip, but i'm thinking about redesign it a lot. I want to make these dragon more Ballon like, something a bit like Nefraim from Hugo comics. One of my favor characters from Hugo

Officially de-lurking today to participate in this thread!

    Concept:Monolith Dragon:

Despite their outwardly ferocious look, the Monolith Dragon is essentially a living statue, shunned by the higher dragon order. From birth the young gorge on rocks and moss within their cave habitat, gaining weight at an exponential rate. The weight becomes so substantial, their legs can no longer support their mass and they give out with an exasperated finality. From that point on they are condemned to a life of stoic immobility, growing larger and larger, completely incapable of defending themselves. Their bellowing cries of remorse reverberate throughout the caves, causing terror to passing travellers, and unwarranted aggression from travelling heroes. However the terror is often replaced with pity once the heroes discover they can not defend themselves. The monolith dragon are often found with swords and arrows strewn about their body like scars.

    EDIT: FINAL VERSION:

EDIT:: I think the dragon is done at least.

    EDIT:Moar.

EDIT:Update with first round of painting. Taking a break so I thought I'd show what I have.

    Initial lines:

Hope to get a significant amount done today.

    Okay, good to know!

I'm on a roll today! I think the dragon itself is pretty well finished (Unless there are some critiques??)

So if I can't get that environment for it done then I at least have this to submit

GEB Excellent departure from the whimsical path.

Jesus JPerols, you should do COWs more often. I totally recall your name from somewhere else on the site, but my memory fails me. But quick note, the dragon's right foot is waaaaay too high. You have to pull it a few notches down so it's on the same perspective lines created by the left foot.

tylerbsr7 : nice entry, reminds me of the fat croc/alligator in The Frog Princess movie for some reason. Composition note though, the two rock spires on the left of the image are like cockblockers to me. I'm serious, it's like a sexy dynamic lighting scheme, and then my eye is stopped by the random broken column it forms. I also don't see other spires around the cave, so my advice is to get rid of the spires. It flattens out the image a bit and I like where the atmospheric perspective is going in the background.

DPFX: great sketch! Can't wait to see the colour scheme. God all that sagging fat. @.@

triangular: what a cutie!! It's like pudding! Ohnomnomnom. Nom. Can't wait to see it finished (With the background). I think you can add a bit more colour on the dragon because of the background.

GEB: oh jesus. I'm afraid to see it coloured. @.@ I think you can push the contrast a little bit, but that's probably going to come with the colour,ja?

Great entries guys! (eventhoughtheyareallfatties<--- NOW THAT'S NOT NICE AT ALL. cough.)

    Fat Dragon

This is my first post on c.a.; I've been looking for some ideas for digital painting. I'm just getting started with it and i'm trying to get in some good practice. The c.o.w. seems like fun so i thought i'd start here. Hit me up with some critiques, don't hold back I really want to improve.
