    IDW # 186 : Karakuri ningyō Dog

    Topic: Karakuri ningyō Dog
    Deadline: Sunday, November 20

Karakuri ningyō are traditional Japanese robot dolls that serve tea. Or little robot doggies will get the paper. However, you aren't allowed to get all sci-fi on me! Try to keep to hand made and traditional feel of the Japanese dolls. If you look at the dolls' faces, they mimic the styles of the painting of the time. Animals in oriental paintings too have their own categorical features: they tend to look a bit bug eyed for one thing. I suggest looking at a few Chinese and Japanese (Shisi) gaurdian/shrine dog sculptures and old paintings of dogs and cats.

You do not have to stay strictly with the traditional- use it as inspiration. I just don't want shiny chrome, minimalist, exposed ball and socket joints type things. You must make two images for this round: one which shows the dog as it would look as it is fulfilling its task- the other as it would look when its cover is taken off and its mechanics exposed. They mechanics don't have to be technically sound, just look like they should work.

    Information and Inspiration:
    Karakuri ningyo on Wikipedia
    Pugs in the Ancient Orient
    Shisha on Wikipedia
    Fetch(game) on Wikipedia

    Brief:
    1. Design and draw a Karakuri ningyō Dog.
    2. That's it... now draw!

I am guessing the deadline is next sunday, yes? Since this contest was posted on the 14ht if I am not mistaken, it would be damn near impossible to go back in time and post this. If so, we should have had at least a few unexplainable posts lasst sunday.

    So, deadline Sunday the 20th?

    Robo Dogs

So I did a 2nd one, I own boston terriers and I wanted something with that dynamic energy, but i still think the first dog is pretty funny so I may finish both.

    fun

Randize I love how you have him small enough for a tea cup to go on his head, I think this tiny pup could handle the paper, it's cool!.

pjtyour newest one is coolest to me, maybe his pose is just more dynamic, looks awesome I want it to bring me tea.

well this was just fun for doodle time, not sure maybe if I get into it more I will do the illustration and some design work on his mechanics. Cheers!

So i decided that internal mechanics will determine the silhoutte i can build.

heres mine. I think its fairly believable.

check the vid of how the real ones look : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSvb8p7DQkE

poeticgarble, unbelievable. That's really great man.Are we suppose to design the mechanic first before design most of the time? Thanks for the YouTube link, I really don't have any idea how the doll work at first, but that really help me. I didn't think motion was that important at first, now I learned my lesson.
