E.O.W Round #176: Mecha Flea Market on the Beach

E.O.W Round #176: Mecha Flea Market on the Beach

TOPIC = Mecha Flea Market on the Beach
    inspired by agnidevi* from DA

    Brief:

A place where merchants sell robots/warfare mechas in a coastal bazaar setting.. so your getting Caribbean or Middleastern sci fi. Maybe Mediterranean. Maybe
Mesopotamian. Whether it's tropical and sunny or post apocalyptic with a dark, moody atmosphere is completely up to you as the world creator.

great topic indeed. I´m going with a sci-fi kind of setting which came to me by accident actually. A beach in a mega city where you can buy all sorts of mecha, aircraft and so on from large to small...

thanks Sean, yours coming along very good too

here´s an update. I changed the composition a bit and put in some mechas as I thought my first comp was too empty, wasn´t it?. I never really painted mechas so this is a good practise. Still lots of stuff to do here though...

here's my first attempt i abandoned this image, not sure if i will be able to start something else. learned a lot anyway. decided my approach was wrong, tried kind of an alla prima method. i was glad that I was able to find color but maybe went overboard. too busy, but the biggest is maybe lack of a unified light. so maybe this is a breakthrough picture who knows.

maybe i will come back to it when i feel less discouraged

Great topic, Vulgar. Haven't really had time to cook up anything decent yet, so I'm only throwing some crits here. I'm trying to be pretty frank and honest here cause that's what we all need to get better.

android411 The basic composition works pretty nicely. You lead the eye well through the picture plane. Good use of athmospheric perspective too. I don't know about that big mech on the left though. It pretty much kills the rhytm. I'd get rid of it and instead add more smaller mechs on the beach with only some variation in size, color and shape. You might want to think of focal points more too cause right now that white building on the background competes way too much with the actual subject of the painting. I don't dig those big shadows(?) on the cliff face too much either which leads me to the big question for the end: Where's the main light (sun) coming from? Some things suggest it's coming from right, but then there's shadows and other planes that suggest it's coming from a totally different direction. Making the lighting inconsistent is a sure way to confuse the viewer, so maybe think about that some more.

Sean McClain Good start. I think your approach has nice originality in the color choises and also in the viewpoint. Right now I'd concentrate on the question of how to communicate the idea of a 'flea market' more. The mech has some interesting shapes but the overall design is still bit random. Since it is the main focal point I'd try to make sure it reads better. Time for some reference?

MatejaPetkovic I like it so far. Good use of perspective and nice color choises. How are you planning to add the coastal in the setting?

SMILEFACE Niice dude. Lovely composition. Hard to come up with any crits for this one. Strong piece.

yoitisi Nice start. Though I think your composition is slightly split in half at the moment. Unifying the color scheme might help a bit. You could for example repeat the greens of the other (broken?) mech on the main guy too. Check your perspective too before getting into rendering more. I think the problems lie in the right side mech that doesn't seem to allign with the horizon.

slence Good good. I don't really find anything major to nag about at this stage. Want to see how you take this further.

Howie Nice sketch. Composition looks good, though I wonder if it would work even better flipped? Interesting to see how you take this to final.

Penpoint Pretty much everything that I wrote for Android goes with you too. I think the bazaar in the middle is the most interesting part so far so I'd develop that further but would also crop left or right side of the piece to avoid the bulls eye effect you're getting now by putting the subject in the middle of the picture plane.

DrZero: Nice idea. Check your perspective before going too far.

Urötskidoji: Nice sketch. Remember athmospheric perspective though. Using really dark values in the distant background tends to kill the depth.

Really roughing stuff in right now. I figured I'd look at a more sketchy take on the flea market. Old pile of broken electronics? It's totally a store. Come on down to Skansha's used and broken robot emporium and get a great deal!

I will be extending the composition on the right side to incorporate more of the AT-ST-type robot and to balance/open it up.
