    Justa's Sketchbook

Decided to start one myself, I'm pretty slow but here are some things. Pretty much all from reference, faces using a grid for now.

    thanks for stopping by.

Hi D'Arcy. Thank you so much for the critique on my work. Beautiful stuff you have going on here. Lots of great attention to detail. Instead of the grid, may I suggest trying 'ErrantCrow's' head rotation excercise sometime ? I've found it really helpful as an alternate way to approaching heads (only problem is that the file size is quite small)

    Paint sketches

LaCan has encouraged me to try a more forgiving medium like oils instead of my usual obsessional acrylic work, decided to compromise and do some loose acrylic sketches with a lot of medium and retarder to give me more time to blend. Just on sketch pad paper. These are the result; I liked one enough to frame it as you can see. They are supposed to be standing stones, all but the 1st and last I was working from photo reference to see if I could get the colors right. All about 30 min start to finish, about 5x7 inches.

Looking good. Plus points for putting the effort into loosening things up . Compositions are nice and simple. My favorite is #5.

What I especially liked in the framed painting from your wip thread was atmospheric perspective. This last batch shies away from it somewhat. Pronouncing it more would give paintings a sense of spatial depth and a dimension of additional mystery. Simple atmospheric perspective can do miracles. And you can range it from an easy sfumato of a sunny day to a straight on dense fog, depending on a subtle feel you wish to evoke within particular painting.

    Keep exploring!

cumquat: thank you, I'll give that a go!

    LaCan:
You are quite right, much less atmosphere here, of if any mostly by accident :-)
I'm going to try a few more, perhaps a little bigger and see if I can get the light more realistic - just trying to get the colors reasonably close to the reference was the main goal, next step will be thinking about how I know it *should* look.

    Thanks again!
