So it begins! I'm excited to be around our group every day I go in. Like being a student again myself. Jeff, thanks for posting these!

Cool shots, Josh! It's been amazing getting to see how everyone uses the same basic materials to create such disparate work - part of the joy of working side by side in the studio!

I'm an international student planning to move to Richmond and apply in TAD. Since i'll be coming on student visa is it easy to get jobs over there and accomodation for living?

Sweet. Awesome to have you coming to the program.

At this point in time, I do not believe that TAD qualifies for student visas because it isn't accredited. I think the max visa a student has gotten was 6 months.

As far as richmond, I am sure you can find a reasonable apartment and jobs are as easy to get depending on your skill set, available hours, and of course... standards. haha. People in richmond would be better suited to answer your questions about the working and living arrangements.

    Ready or not...

    Hey everybody,

My name is Nathan and I'll be joining the Richmond POD as a full-time student on the Foundations/Entertainment Design track starting this Fall. I'm all official now, got my tuition paid up and I've found a place to live in Richmond so I thought this might be a good opportunity to get to know you fine folks.

First a little bit about me. I have a background in some of the more technical arts, I learned technical drafting and 3D modeling in High School where I also started doing freelance graphic design. In college at Virginia Tech I double-majored in Industrial Design and Graphic Design. While I did take some studio classes I didn't really get much in the way of traditional arts education. My passion, however, has always been conceptual pre-production art of the type that takes place in the planning stages of a film, TV show or video game. For the past 7 years I've been working as a staff graphic designer for Virginia Tech University Relations (doing print design work, alumni mags etc.) while teaching myself the necessary skills to pursue the career path I want. There aren't many opportunities for this type of work or training on the East Coast so I've been scrounging what I can and getting involved in professional development wherever available. You can see some of my work on an independent game project here: http://rockstorm-games.net/dws/. So when I heard that TAD was offering a course in Entertainment Design and that they had a node in my State I was thrilled. I'm very excited to get started in August. It is a bit scary leaving the security of a full-time job (State-funded with excellent benefits) for the life of a penniless student again, though.

Please feel free to introduce yourselves, I may have met some of you briefly when I toured the RVA POD location last year, but it's been a while so I'll need a refresher.

Incidentally, will any of you guys be going to the 3-Week workshop in July? It would be great to meet up with some people I know, at least virtually.

Look forward to seeing you here in Richmond. The space has a great group of working artists and the support level is really outstanding. If you need anything to help your transition to your new city let us know. Will be meeting you soon.

I was planning to attend the workshop but my US Visa application has been rejected this morning because they afraid i might not leave the US after the workshop. But it does look suspicious attending a 3 week workshop in US and as i am about to join a school in the US. Is the anyway that TAD could help appeal for my Visa. It cost me USD 145 each time it is rejected. Thanks.

    RVA!

Hey everyone! This thread hasn't been updated in a while, so I'll throw in what's been happening here at the Richmond studio.

I'm Ally Hodges, and I'm in the TAD online program that lasts 2.5 years, and my last semester starts in August. The ride so far has been amazing. It's hard to describe it all, it's a lot, so I'll just say some news!!

Jeffrey Alan Love, the studio assistant and previous career mentorship student, won a gold medal last year in the Richmond Illustrators Club Juried Show. He teaches at the Da Vinci center at Virginia Commonwealth University. He recently had a gallery show with good friend and colleague Edward Kinsella at Ghostprint Gallery called Jugen.

Also, Edward Kinsella recently won a Gold Medal at Spectrum! He was also a career mentorship student here in Richmond. He also won a Silver Medal from the Society of Illustrators!

Leslie Herman, a previous career mentorship student, won a Gold Medal at the Society of Illustrators!

Richie Pope, who just finished the career mentorship program this year, won this year's Gold Medal in the Richmond Illustrators Club Juried Show!

I hope I haven't missed any big news to share. They are all working illustrators and I find them to be an inspiration. I just want to let everyone know about the awesome stuff that has happened.
