ROUND #214, the 4 apocalyptic mounts

    topic:

    ROUND#214, the 4 apocalyptic mounts

This week we'll be using the 4 horsemen of the apocalypse as a source for inspiration.

The 4 horsemen (conquest, slaughter or war, famine, and death) are commonly addressed as, well, horsemen. For this challenge we'll be changing it up and designing an original creature for them to ride instead of a horse.

    requirements...

-Your design should embody visual characteristics of the horseman you decide to represent (you can do more than one if you're feeling daring, but you are only required to do one).

-Your creature must be able to carry a rider (although including the rider is optional).

-Last requirement (sorry for so many this week hahaha) is that your creature must be primarily colored according to the rider. Those being...

    Conquest... white.

    Slaughter (or war)... red.

    Famine... black.

    Death... pale or greenish.

Get creative and show us a new take on the apocalypse!

You kind of scared me there o_O...I though we were going to have to do 4 creatures now, but we have the choice of one or more, so phew!

Should be a fun round. I think I'll go for conquest. I have trouble rendering white creatures, so it'll be a nice challenge for myself.

nice. designing all 4 to completion sounds tempting... lol, but not after the game critter round.

not sure which mount theme i'll go with yet - will brainstorm the snickers out of it. most likely war, though.

Hopefully I'll have time for this (got a lot going on in the next few days, so unsure). Gonna give it a shot anyway

I like the sound of famine. Here's a quick sketch to show my initial idea -

I'll come up with more later tonight, but I'm quite keen on an enormous slug. A good symbol for rot and decay imo. Might try out some designs inspired by maggots, locusts etc etc.

Some quickie doodles for either the death or famine mount, I haven't decided yet. I like the idea of the vulture type head for him, they're the first animal that popped into my head when I thought of death and decay. As for the body, I used a picture of an emaciated horse for ref. I'm debating on whether to add some wings.

    Love this prompt!

Working on ideas for all four so I can choose my favorite - not sure which that shall be at this point. I've been trying to give them all the chimeric quality of some of the other biblical creatures -

I like the look, but it does seem a bit similar to DefiledVisions entry for the game critter quadruped.... you know, except for the lack of legs.

First idea for death... still too similar to a horse though so I'll be changing it some more.

EDIT: I tried going for a more elephant-build. But it's still looking like a horse. I didn't realize it would be so hard to make something look like an apocalyptic mount... and not look like a horse. I also tried a centaur-sort-of creature but I don't know anymore.

I like the look, but if it's too "horsey" how about going bipedal like a kangaroo?

A kangaroo would be painful to ride! XD It'd bounce right up into the poor rider's goods!

I went ahead with my mount idea and added a saddle and stuff, then remembered, no accesories in CoW!! It's probably not my final design, but wanted to post what I had...

I am wondering about the accessories bit as well - what about bridles and barding?
I suppose I could just get creative and make it apart of the critters flesh...

This is my first attempt at CoW (also fairly new to digital) but I figured I'm not going to get better without trying. So hopefully i can get this guy finished up by the date.

That's a good point to bring up, Migsta!

So will we not be allowed any non-organic accessories at all? I thought maybe since we were allowed to include the rider we might get away with adding some of the tack?

I see evidence of saddling and other harnesses in this winner:

    http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...3&postcount=40

    I'm guessing it's allowed if there's a rider.

Maybe "reminiscent of" would have been more appropriate. It's certainly not problematically similar. Basically, the all black, bigger up front than in back, with spikes on back look. Going with it as a slug is absolutely a fundamentally different concept, so please don't think I was suggesting you were taking someone else's idea. It just reminded me of the other critter.
