    Draw Like You Mean It

Up until now I've been hesitant to post any of my work on here, but today I remembered that nobody ever got anything done by being a pussy. Having just turned seventeen last month, I'm probably a few years younger than most of you and a lot less experienced, but I'd be stupid not to take advantage of all the things you guys can teach me. And you don't seem like the type of people who'd be vicious with critiques... So please, give me your opinions. What do I need to improve on?

I wish I could have painted like this with seventeen XD But seeing just one (good) picture right now makes it difficult to give you critique. Show more of your work, show scribbles, show everything and tell what you'd like to do. I think, that makes it easier for people to help you =)

On my computer I can see the details of the torso without having to struggle, but I have a feeling my moniter is a little weird, so I have no idea how this looks on everyone else's...
I just started seriously focusing on anatomy, color and lighting late last year, so I've got a long way to go from here. I'm pretty much open to any advice anyone can give me. Especially anatomy.

No real crits except that on the very last drawing the nose is too far down on the right portrait, should be higher up, though the face itself might be a bit too elongated which might be partially the reason too. But besides that looks good

You've got some goods drawings here. But, you obviously got a problem with the noses. As said before, do some studies and you're gonna rock !

Not really. Don't mean to sound harsh, but to really improve your noses (and this goes for everything else as well, obviously) I say pick up a couple of good anatomy books (George B. Bridgeman, Burne Hogarth, Dr. Paul Richer etc) and try to understand the forms of the nose. If you know how the nose is constructed it will be much easier to spot the variations of construction in real life. You sure are on the right track though, and I take it you want to go to Florence, which is awesome!

I agree that the noses could use more practice, they're a little too straight and perfect.

I'm exhausted. Life has been shit for the last couple months with family problems and work. And I've been negligent in my studies. I've pretty much just been doodling. I don't have much to show today, but I thought I'd post anyway.
Sigh... I like where I'm going, but I feel like my older paintings had more personality. I need to get that back.
Anyway, sketches and some WIPs. I've got about fifteen paintings going on at the same time, which, as it turns out, is a little more than I can handle. I keep starting new ones with no end in sight because once I have an idea I like, I just can't leave it alone.
    Aaaaugh.

So I decided to draw with ballpoint pen this time to teach myself line quality and problem-solving, but the only thing it really accomplished was making me notice how flat my drawings are. I tried to push my values a little further in the second drawing but I don't think it's much better than the first. So my next mission? A better understanding of form and how it reacts to light.

Oh, and I also found one of my surviving drawings from about five years ago. It's really, really awful, but it made me laugh and it's a good reminder to me of the benefits of hard work, so I thought I'd post it.

    Nice stuff so far!

I'd like to see you switch it up a bit when you have the chance! It's awesome that you're buckling down and focusing on faces and male anatomy, but I think doing some still lifes or object studies could be really good for you too--looking at your drawings, when you have objects or backgrounds in there it seems like those are definitely afterthoughts compared to your really nicely rendered figures. If it's something you're not interested in or confident about, well... all the more reason to draw it!

I love your work. Your crosshatching with ballpoint pen is just amazing! One thing is still taking my attention: most of your male characters seem to have very long nose. Usually also the faces are too tall.

Haha, yes, the noses. Seems a lot of people notice that in my work. I'm trying to make a habit of making the noses shorter, but I don't have a lot to show for it right now.
